All the evidence reviewed in four volumes of The Ancient Black Hebrews shows the ancient Israelites were a Black people. Abraham was the ancestor of the Israelites. The term 'black' was given a rebirth by the black youth revolt. As reborn, it does not refer to the particular color of any particular person, but to the attitude of pride and devotion to the race whose homeland from times immemorial was called 'The Land of the Blacks.' Almost overnight our youngsters made 'black' coequal with 'white' in respectability, and challenged the anti-black Negroes to decide on which side they stood. This was no problem for many who are light or even near-white in complexion, for they themselves were among the first to proclaim with pride, 'call me black!' Those who hate the term but hold the majority of leadership positions feel compelled to use it to protect their leadership roles.”

To maintain their power, dominant groups create and maintain a popular system of 'commonsense' ideas that support their right to rule. In the United States, hegemonic ideologies concerning race, class, gender, sexuality, and nation are often so pervasive that it is difficult to conceptualize alternatives to them, let alone ways of resisting the social practices that they justify.

Zinn has been building his argument for 22 chapters, and his conclusion calls the reader to action. Because the United States has such a large and diverse population, its leaders need to be creative and smart if they want to keep power. This quote sums up the many methods of control he's already described—carefully limited reform, a two-party system with similar options, and a prosperous middle class. The methods Zinn describes may not look or feel like control. They may resemble progress. But they can keep people from noticing how much stays the same.
