Repetitive action/dialog bogged down the forward progress of the plot. I found I could skip over half a chapter and still be in roughly the same spot in the narrative.

More than any artist encountered during my adult life, Paul Simon has reached into the part of my mind where I truly live, where I find my most human seed and essence. That he remains so clear, frank and humble about his astonishing gifts was a revelation. Gladwell and Headlam chose wisely.

Téa Obreht has created an orgy of exposition in which no character is too small to merit a paragraph of excruciatingly rich description. Immigrants, thieves, weird animals, sodbusters, cameleers – and a camel named Burke – ghosts and ghost-talkers with multiple names all come to life vividly. This mind-jangling myriad of characters is drawn in such detail, in fact, that no timeline or narrative thread is discernible. The language is beautiful, true. But it’s as if Obreht has set out on purpose to befuddle and confound the reader, as if that is where the fun is. Readers who love this book tell us that “once you get into it, you can’t put it down.” Well, if it takes more than one-third of a 348-page novel to captivate me, you’ve lost me. On the prairie. In a drought.

Overly arty adaptation. Soundtrack sometimes obscuring dialogue, story line shifted from original with odd flashbacks, and some key plot points glossed over. Still, Abraham ‘s narration is satisfying. The tone of Melville ‘s classic comes across.
