In 1998, the American Jorgenson family had been on a year-long road trip in Australia. One humid, storming night, the mother - Elsa Jorgenson - vanished in an isolated stretch of Australian everglades. Elsa was never seen again. That night, twelve-year-old Lily Jorgenson was left alone and terrified in the family camper—even her teenage sister Iris is missing. When Iris comes racing back through the rain, she refuses to tell where she’s been. Lily is certain her sister is hiding a dark secret.

Excruciating
Revisado: 04-04-25
After completing chapter 33, I took a step back and asked myself "Why am I listening to this?!" Incredibly boring - if it was leading up to some astonishing climax, the steps getting to that point were tedious. What is it about novels these days?! Are authors tasked with drawing out their novels to unnecessary lengths - and, if so, why? Because it seems most of them are padded with verbosity that dulls the interest, as well as any suspense. I simply could not take one chapter more. Done and done.
Oh .. and while I'm at it, the narrator - like so many recently - mispronounces words to the point where one wonders if English is even their primary language ... and misinterprets the meaning of sentences to the point where one wonders if they're going into the recording studio for a cold read.
In sum, quantity over quality is the name of the game.

Historia
When Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore dies, she’s not only North Carolina’s richest woman, she’s also its most notorious. The victim of a famous kidnapping as a child and a widow four times over, Ruby ruled the tiny town of Tavistock from Ashby House, her family’s estate high in the Blue Ridge Mountains. But in the aftermath of her death, her adopted son, Camden, wants little to do with the house or the money—and even less to do with the surviving McTavishes.

That's It?!
Revisado: 03-22-25
Endless lead-in to feeble "climax" ... just as I thought it was about to get good - the narrator intoned "Epilogue" and followed up with boring "reveals" that didn't at all matter to me - too little, too late. I'd checked out.
The narrators sounded as though they went in cold - first read. Otherwise, how could *all three* continually emphasize the wrong word in a sentence? Get the cadence wrong? The emotion behind the words irrelevant?
The over-the-top rave reviews are eye-rolling ... either solicited by those invested in its success, or the sheep who think it *must* be amazing because ... well ... maaaaaaaaa ...
In any case, I've deleted from my Wish List two more novels by this author - life's too short.

Outstanding plot, characters, and writing ... delivered with perfect pitch by the narrators. A rare example of a book to be listened to, rather than read.

Tedious and Overwrought
Revisado: 11-09-24
Impossible to continue past chapter 100 ... and even that was a slog. Unbearable amount of brain-numbing details - in and out and round about the same characters and situations. I simply couldn't.

Historia
Hen and her husband, Lloyd, have settled into a quiet life in a new house outside of Boston, Massachusetts. Hen (short for Henrietta) is an illustrator and works out of a studio nearby and has found the right meds to control her bipolar disorder. Finally, she’s found some stability and peace. But when they meet the neighbors next door, that calm begins to erode as she spots a familiar object displayed on the husband’s office shelf. The sports trophy looks exactly like one that went missing from the home of a young man who was killed two years ago.

Tedious writing, monotonous narration
Revisado: 10-12-24
Ignore all high ratings - if you demand a compelling plot, tight writing and a narration that lifts you into the heart of the story. This has none of the above, and anyone who awarded it more than 2 stars in any category must have disappointingly low standards and expectations. Give it a miss.

Disappointing Novel and Narrator
Revisado: 07-04-24
This is the least interesting of Austen's works, imo - it drags, with too little dialog and too much repetitive filler. It really seems as though Austen was instructed to go back to her manuscript and add enough padding to make it long enough to publish.
Add to this the lackluster narration of Ms Stevenson. Her interpretation of Austen has, until now, been pitch perfect and delightful. However, with "Persuasion" her tone and inflection rarely vary ... she drones on and on in a soft, gentle tone, no matter what action or situation is being described.
Combined, the entire listening experience is boring.

Zero plot, unlikeable characters, poor narration
Revisado: 05-08-24
The characters were highly unlikeable, and their personal hygiene was cringe-making ... why the author graced us with descriptions of dirty clothes, body odor, unwashed hair, and filthy living conditions is a mystery.
There is no plot. The filler to stretch into a novel what basically comes across as a writing assignment is beyond boring.
The male narrator's "female" voice is a caricature; his male delivery is constantly angry. The female narrator is uninspired, and her "male" voices are also angry.
Give it a pass. Not worth a credit. And for shame, Ms Kelk. You've hit a wall and need to regroup.

Obnoxious Heroine
Revisado: 02-03-24
The lead character is extremely unlikeable - everything she did was self-centered and selfish and absolutely unjustifiable ... and yet, we're supposed to rally around her choices and behaviors.
The narration did no favors to the author's work. McFarlane is a clever, witty writer ... and yet most was lost on the listener due to the narrator's "deaf ear" towards what she was reading. And her mispronunciations of so many words made me hoot with laughter. I kept thinking "MUST remember this clunker for a review!" but of course, I didn't. Hilarious stuff, though it makes me wonder: is there no editor? No director? No one to listen to the daily "rushes" and correct accordingly?
Anyway. Not an experience I'd recommend.

Owen returns to Lake Cane to finish his senior year, where people he hardly remembers despise him for his father's crimes.

Unbearable Narration
Revisado: 01-30-24
The narrator's misinterpretation of almost every line of dialog ... reading with the wrong emotions - emphasizing the wrong words ... made it unbearable to continue listening. Surely these audiobooks have a director, whose job it is to ensure that they are read in a way that accurately conveys the author's intent. In any case, after four chapters, I pulled the plug. Life's too short, and my listening time too valuable, to suffer unnecessary frustration - which listening to this book proved to be.

From #1 New York Times-best-selling author Nora Roberts comes a novel of a woman who needs nothing, a man who sees everything, and the web of deceit, greed, and danger that brings them together - and that could tear them apart… As a professional house-sitter and freelance writer, nothing ties Lila Emerson down - not her work, not a home, and definitely not a relationship. She spends her life moving from one job to the next, sometimes crashing at a friend's Manhattan apartment.

No Redeeming Qualities
Revisado: 01-29-24
Everything about this novel pushed me away ... beginning with the fact that the protagonists were so unlikeable. Then, the way the author manipulated their behaviors in the face of murder, torture, and grief. Couldn't even finish listening.
