Historia
Virginia, 1864—Libby Steadman’s husband has been away for so long that she can barely conjure his voice in her dreams. While she longs for him in the night, fearing him dead in a Union prison camp, her days are spent running a gristmill with her teenage niece, a hired hand, and his wife, all the grain they can produce requisitioned by the Confederate Army. It’s an uneasy life in the Shenandoah Valley, the territory frequently changing hands, control swinging back and forth like a pendulum between North and South, and Libby awakens every morning expecting to see her land a battlefield.

Not as good as it could have been
Revisado: 03-27-25
The summary (and historical data at the end) made for a good novel but the delivery was more of a sappy Hallmark story.

Awful
Revisado: 02-23-25
Good grief what terrible writing and editing!!! The entire book is “ Stone said, Molly said , Amber said …. I counted 30 “…. said” s in less than 3 minutes of listening. Sophomoric at best but I’d even fail a sophomore for such repetitive and boring writing. Take out “……said” and you shorten the book by half. Don’t bother with listening to this , it’s dreadful!

Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

So many no no’s about a forensic psych facility. No way would pool balls and pool cues be allowed!!! All can easily be used as weapons. A drug cabinet left open???!! Really?
I worked forensic psych facility… so much more could be done to add credence to the story. Really outside the lines (?illegal) shenanigans by a “therapist “. If I didn’t know the facts, it would have been an ok story but it was just not believable.

Ugh
Revisado: 06-27-24
Predictable story of abusive relationships with repetitive incidents of violence and abuse. I’m sorry but I can’t understand or tolerate weak women. This just went on and on in circles of codependency. I don’t find that entertaining. Though some of the characters were likable, they too failed to step up to the plate and act. I don’t recommend this unless you want to feel frustrated and angry at people in toxic relationships. Too much pathology, too much sappy and corny romance, too predictable a plot, too little drama, mystery or suspense. Save your credit … try “My Dear Hamilton “ or “The Rose Code” instead

Better than previous James Patterson co authored books by far. Perhaps it’s time Nancy Allen struck out on her own! Excellent plot with good character development and good twists. Just when you think you have it figured out…… highly recommended! Narration is well done too.

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

Interesting
Revisado: 04-17-24
I was at the end of this book when I realized I had enjoyed it more than I thought. It is an odd bit of historical fiction but with well documented truths about the origin of the Oxford Dictionary and the misogyny of the times. It certainly has me thinking about words and their meaning more. I listen to an audiobook constantly as a way of dealing with severe tinnitus so I have an extensive list of books I have read. Initially I was listening just for the background noise but it soon captured my interest and I was drawn to the characters. It covers an expanse of time and the author does a good job of developing both the people and events. Though some might object to some of the words (language), that is in itself the point. What is and is not considered acceptable and by whom.
I wonder if ‘misogyny’ made the cut or was on the list of ‘lost words’??!
An over good and thought provoking read!

Way Out There
Revisado: 04-06-24
Tier One meets Back to the Future The Tier One series was a truly amazing collection of great characters in believable scenarios with well written details of action and interactions. This is more than a little too sci fi that puts it beyond the believable and although the writing is still very good, the premise is just eye rolling. Ray Porter does his usual 5⭐️ performance but, unlike the previous series, I was not nearly as ‘connected’ with the characters.
Not sure I would read the sequel but would advance order another Tier One or similar.

Historia
From the New York Times best-selling authors of America's First Daughter comes the epic story of Eliza Schuyler Hamilton - a revolutionary woman who, like her new nation, struggled to define herself in the wake of war, betrayal, and tragedy. In this haunting, moving, and beautifully written book, Dray and Kamoie used thousands of letters and original sources to tell Eliza's story as it's never been told before - not just as the wronged wife at the center of a political sex scandal but also as a founding mother who shaped an American legacy in her own right.

Great history lesson!
Revisado: 03-21-24
I kept fact checking as I read and was amazed at the research that the authors put into this book. Never realized the conflict and animosity of our founding fathers ( kinda like politics of today!) nor that lgbtq was an issue even then ( fact check it!) Exceedingly well written and narrated.

Corpsman is “kor- man” not Kors man!!
Revisado: 02-15-24
As a Catholic nursing school graduate who went directly into the Navy in the late 60’s I am certain the preparation for practice was far better than described. Granted, no basic education prepares you for Trauma I level care (and worse) but the author made the main character appear overly naive and inadequate. I had a hard time liking her and was disappointed this was more of a sappy romance with very poor decision making than an account of women in service during Vietnam . And the story of’ plane shot down on flight home” is straight out of a MASH episode. And point of information.. as an active duty nurse during the Vietnam years, we all knew our greatest advice and guidance came from senior enlisted personnel. Would not have survived without my HM 2’s, HM 3’s and Sr Chiefs . Not enough credit given here. A light shown on a very sad time for many and I thank the author for that. Perhaps more people will recognize’Nam vets now . It’s not too late for a “welcome home “ or “thank you for your service. “

Revisado: 01-29-24
Described in painful detail… each mind boggling event… walking in 2’ of snow in -5 degrees with wet clothes… can you describe hypothermia? Yet never a mention except cold toes and numb fingers.
The premise of the story is good but the devil is in the details. Good story with a twist at the end but it is overwritten. Not sure how many times I rolled my eyes and said “seriously??!” But it was a lot. I would not recommend this.
