10hrs Too Long
Revisado: 03-13-25
Almost DNF.
Conceptually, the premise of this novel is great and lays the foundation for what could be a terrifying tale involving magic, possession, and the challenges of familial bonds. However, the story quickly loses steam after the first third and drags it's listener on for another few hours before starting to build towards anything resembling narrative progression. As a horror novel, the scares and suspense are few and far between, if not absent entirely. Additionally, the majority of the primary characters are insufferable.

Lysander's Narrator
Revisado: 01-09-25
Fantastic novel with great narrators! My only point of criticism is that Lysander's narrator uses incredibly similar choices for nearly all male characters that are not Lysander. Some of the narrators also pronounce the same word differently from once another and directly from narrators of previous books in the series.

Historia
The Reaper is a legend, more myth than man: the savior of worlds, the leader of the Rising, the breaker of chains. But the Reaper is also Darrow, born of the red soil of Mars: a husband, a father, a friend. The worlds once needed the Reaper. But now they need Darrow. Because after the dark age will come a new age: of light, of victory, of hope.

Single Narrator
Revisado: 01-09-25
While this novel follows its two predecessors by telling the story from more then I've character's perspective, there is only one narrator. Overall, he does a fantastic job, however, with so many characters to voice there are a few instances where it is hard to tell which character is speaking until it is explicitly stated.

Historia
When Jax receives nine missed calls from her older sister, Lexie, she assumes that it’s just another one of her sister’s episodes. Manic and increasingly out of touch with reality, Lexie has pushed Jax away for over a year. But the next day, Lexie is dead: drowned in the pool at their grandmother’s estate. When Jax arrives at the house to go through her sister’s things, she learns that Lexie was researching the history of their family and the property. And as she dives in deeper herself, she discovers that the land holds a far darker past than she could have ever imagined.

Nothing Unique
Revisado: 09-07-23
This novel is not bad, but it lacks its own character and substance. There are no twists or turns the listener can't predict within the first couple of hours.
All chapters (and there are many) starting with the phrase, "I am Mrs. Monroe, and I am..." are dreadfully dull and add very little to the story overall.

Historia
Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he's still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the craft of modern sorcery.

Few Likeable Characters
Revisado: 05-20-23
This novel serves as a rare example of one whose TV adaptation was far superior. The novel is 20hrs of the main character complaining about every inconvenience he faces. Most supporting characters are given very little depth until the final few chapters.

Julia's backstory could've been summarized in a just a couple chapters instead of half the book. These chapters are incredibly dull and only serve to break up the momentum of the main storyline.

Historia
When a grisly murder occurs on the Isle of Lewis that bears similarities to a brutal killing on the mainland, Edinburgh detective Fin Macleod is dispatched to the Outer Hebrides to investigate, embarking at the same time on a voyage into his own troubled past. As Fin reconnects with the people and places of his tortured childhood, the beautiful island and its ancient customs once again begin to assert their grip on his psyche. Every step toward solving the case brings Fin closer to a confrontation with the dark events of the past that shaped - and nearly destroyed - his life.

Great narrator, sub-par story
Revisado: 11-10-21
The first and last hour are very good. The remainder of the story is filled with flashbacks that last longer than the actual progression of the case. Not worth the credit.

Fantastic World Expansion
Revisado: 05-18-21
Perfect sequel to D.L. Jennings' first novel The Gift of the Shaper. This author took great care to expand this fantasy world to encompass neighboring kingdoms, capital cities, and mysterious new warring factions. New characters set the scene for what is to come while returning faces come to terms with their new realities. Couldn't put it down!

Historia
As Soldiers Live opens, Croaker is military dictator of all the Taglias, and no Black Company member has died in battle for four years. Croaker figures it can't last. He's right. For, of course, many of the Company's old adversaries are still around. Narayan Singh and his adopted daughter - actually the offspring of Croaker and the Lady - hope to bring about the apocalyptic Year of the Skulls. Other old enemies like Shadowcatcher, Longshadow, and Howler are also ready to do the Company harm.

Change of Audiobook Narrator
Revisado: 02-04-20
I would like to preface up front that my 3 star review is solely based on the audio perfective and not the story content itself. since the story is written from a first person perspective and that the story shifts to another characters POV, it makes perfect sense for the new audiobook narrator to change as well. However, the new narrator pronounces names and locations differently than the previous narrator while also presenting pre-existing characters with verbal accents not previously used for this characters.
