This most recent addition to the series lacks a consistent story line and character development that most enjoyed in the prior installments in the series. Lots of definitions of medical terminology and dog training techniques.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I've have enjoyed the prior books in this series. I am having real problems listening to this one. The story is slow to develop with much time spent on small details while other elements in the story seem undeveloped. My mahor issue is the narration which has made this very difficult to listen to.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Her delivery does not change regardless of the events described. She has a very sing song presentation which makes it difficult to fully engage in the story.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Probably not.

Would you try another book from Jane Lotter and/or Sue Pitkin and Tessa Marts ?

THis book was published after the author Jane Lotter passed away. The book was a bit predictable and mildly entertaining. I listened on a long flight and it helped to pass the time.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would strongly recommend this book. I have not enjoyed another book as much for years. The narration is excellent, the prose is absorbing and the characters and their challenges will stay with you for a long time. This is one of the very few books I would listen to a second time.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Tinker

If you could take any character from Rules of Civility out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Katia to discuss her favorite books and how reading helped her navigate coming of age in the social world of New York after the depression

Would you listen to Crowned and Dangerous again? Why?

This is very easy to listen to- enjoyed the book but not the type I would read again.

What about Katherine Kellgren’s performance did you like?

Great voices for the characters. She is a very engaging narrator.

Any additional comments?

Best plot of the series- but you don't listen for the plot.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I have enjoyed all of the Elly Griffiths Ruth Galloway books. The plot in this book was a bit thin and the story line was not as compelling as I wished. The conflict of women as clergy is a bit dated . Also - we don't see any evolution or resolution of Ruth's relationship with Nelson.
The narrator is good - but the change in narration for telephone conversations was strange. On the whole, I did not enjoy this book as much as prior books in the series.

What about Jane McDowell’s performance did you like?

Everything except the telephone conversations.

Would you try another book from Susan Elia MacNeal and/or Susan Duerden?

I have listened to and enjoyed other books in this series. This book however, is not up to the standards of the previous books. First of all, the narration is difficult to listen to - the names of places and people are mispronounced, the narrator has the irritating habit of changing the cadence of her speech at the end of sentences - sometimes seems that she is out of breath. The accents seem forced and exagerated.
More disturbing is the language used to describe African Americans - I doubt that Elinore Rooseveldt ever used the term "darkie" to describe a black person. i know that the book has been well reviewed- but I dissagree.

Any additional comments?

Would you try another book from Alan Bradley and/or Jayne Entwistle?

I think Jayne Entwistle is a fabulous narrator. She is the voice of Flavia de Luce. This book is weak on plot and character development but is well narrated.

What was most disappointing about Alan Bradley’s story?

The plot was never fully developed, characters are flat, at times contradictory and seem to come and go without purpose.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I would say that it was difficult to finish this book. By the time it was over I had no interest in the characters or their lives. I agree that there are passages of brilliant writing -but for the most part it was hard for me to stay engaged in the story.

Do you think And Sons needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

No -

What made the experience of listening to The Beautiful Mystery the most enjoyable?

Ralph Cosham is the voice of Armand Garmache- he is an excellent narrator.

Any additional comments?

I am ready to return to Three Pines, I miss the regular characters especially Ruth and Gabri.
