Historia
Frances Glessner Lee, born a socialite to a wealthy and influential Chicago family in the 1870s, was never meant to have a career, let alone one steeped in death and depravity. Yet she developed a fascination with the investigation of violent crimes and made it her life's work. Best known for creating the Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death, a series of dollhouses that appear charming - until you notice the macabre little details: an overturned chair, or a blood-spattered comforter.

Fascinating story of Francis Glessner Lee and the birth of modern forensics
Revisado: 04-20-25
The title of the book caught my attention. Although I thought it would be focused primarily on the dioramas of crime scenes, it turned out to be a fascinating story of the woman who fought for the field of legal medicine to replace the corrupt and imprecise coroner system. Through force of will and deep intelligence she fought for over five decades to establish a modern system to solve crimes. Excellent narration and excellent story.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

The world’s greatest adventure
Revisado: 03-16-25
The story of Shackleton’s courageous trial of survival is not to be missed. The book is compelling from cover to cove, but the narration gives life to the story. Adding Hurley’s photographs adds yet another level of awareness of the stark challenges Shackleton and his crew of 27 men faced over their 22 month saga of survival. Absolutely stunning.

Historia
Earth has been reinventing itself for more than four billion years, keeping a record of its experiments in the form of rocks. Yet most of us live our lives on the planet with no idea of its extraordinary history, unable to interpret the language of the rocks that surround us. Geologist Marcia Bjornerud believes that our lives can be enriched by understanding our heritage on this old and creative planet. Contrary to their reputation, rocks have eventful lives—and they intersect with our own in surprising ways.

A wonderful geological history of our beautiful breathing living planet.
Revisado: 01-01-25
This is no drab geology book reciting names and qualities of rocks, but rather the history of a breathing living planet. I loved how the author blended specifics of her own life with fascinating details of rocks and geological processes around the globe. Excellent book with great narration. Highly recommend!!

A vivid experience of science exploration in the Antarctic
Revisado: 04-16-24
This is a book for those who enjoy nonfiction stories of science explorations in exotic places. Gracia takes us on a fascinating journey sharing day to day details of how wildlife studies are conducted, in this case on penguins and seals on an isolated island in the Antarctic. It is these types of studies that will help determine the impacts of climate change and intrusions into this fragile ecosystem in hopes of safeguarding it.

Historia
On Christmas Eve, DCI Mackenzie Jones is called to a shooting at a remote farmhouse. Ralph Mallender believes his father lies dead inside. When three more bodies are discovered, it's clear a festive family gathering has turned into a gruesome tragedy. At first it seems like an open and shut case: a murder suicide committed by Ralph's volatile brother Cameron. Then new evidence makes Mack suspect the man who reported the crime is in fact the perpetrator. But Mack isn't the only one with a stake in the case.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

Fabulous book - compelling story for our times
Revisado: 02-19-24
This is a book not to miss - especially narrated by Polly Stone. The Nightingale exemplifies Kristin Hannah’s talents in writings books of historical fiction and details the extraordinary sacrifices made by ordinary people, especially women, in the face of the unspeakable horrors of WW II. This book, written nearly ten years ago, shines a light on our world today showing how the slow march to fascism, in even the smallest of communities, can capture the lives of nearly everyone.

Historia
Never have so many undertaken such a widespread, hurried attempt to remake the world. Predictably, our hubris has led to unintended—and sometimes disastrous—consequences. Over the Seawall tells us the stories behind these unintended consequences and the fixes that can do more harm than good. From seawalls in coastal Japan, to the reengineered waters in the Ganges River Delta, to the artificial ribbon of water supporting both farms and urban centers in parched Arizona, Stephen Robert Miller traces the histories of engineering marvels that were once deemed too smart and too big to fail.

Critical history of water planning around the world to help inform future decisions
Revisado: 12-09-23
This was an informative book about three vastly different water systems and resources that could help to inform future decisions as climate change disrupts traditional water systems decisions. The author provides societal, political, business and historical influences on decisions affecting the manipulation of major water resources and systems in Japan, Bangladesh and the desert Southwest. The book is well researched and resourced and should be on anyone’s reading list if they are interested in this critical topic.
