I kept wanting it to end! Awful book! Torture!
Revisado: 10-18-17
I'd swear Mitzner wrote this book before he wrote Conflict of Interest. It is slow, tedious, boring ... it just wanders around. Characters are unrealistic and unlikeable. The narrator is ok ....male voices good, female voices really bad. I kept thinking "Is this never going to end!?!" And then it dawned on me. It wasn't a punishment that I had to endure. I could stop listening and return it.

I absolutely loved this book. I finished it in 3 days, the last 3 hours this morning at 4 a.m because I couldn't go to sleep before I knew how it ended. It is an excellent story with great characters. There are many twists and turns and I don't want to say anything more because I don't want to give away any of them. The next thing I'm going to do is buy his next book.

I really don't like the way this book is written. It lazes along for hours -- literally -- gets to an "ending" (in quotes because I don't want to reveal anything) and then in the last hour goes to a series of newspaper headlines that the narrator reads to tell you how everything resolves. I wish this writer's editor had had him cut some of the wasted and laborious conversations, especially with his daughter, that add absolutely nothing to the story, his inter-office conflicts (who cares that his office competition is eating his lunches!) and use the "time" to develop more of the content. Instead, he gets to some end point and throws the rest of the feature into headlines, which the narrator throws at you so quickly you may want to listen twice! I give this book 1 star for structure, 4 stars for character development and 4 stars for the story. It's better than that but I think you'll feel robbed having invested more than 20 hours into it only to have the story stood on its end in the last 30 minutes. Should you read it? Probably. I do like the story and the characters -- most of them. I will read another book by him but if he uses the same structure, I'll return it. This one I"m keeping.

Loving this series. After a VERY rough first book that I didn't like until the last few chapters. I've enjoyed books 2-3 & 4 and I just purchased 5 & 6. I like the writing style, main character and narrator more and more.

In this bestselling debut, criminal defense lawyer Joe Dillard has become jaded over the years as he's tried to balance his career against his conscience. Savvy but cynical, Dillard wants to quit doing criminal defense, but he can't resist the chance to represent someone who might actually be innocent. His drug-addicted sister has just been released from prison and his mother is succumbing to Alzheimer's, but Dillard's commitment to the case never wavers despite the personal troubles and professional demands that threaten to destroy him.

All through the book I thought how much I didn't like this book....the main character...the narrator and had planned to return it. Then in the last few chapters I liked it ... very much. And I've already listened to the second in the series which I'll give a higher rating. My recommendation: Skip this one and start with Book 2.

A new author for me! And a great first book to try
Revisado: 03-10-17
Any additional comments?
It's great to discover a new author I haven't read and I already love Dick Hill so it was worth a credit. It's a good read (listen?). A very strange premise (at least I hope nothing at all like that exists) and a great main character. Wish Tigner had used him in a series... but if he did I'm not finding it. So I went on to another stand-alone Tigner book (Betrayal) and I don't like it at all so I'm returning it now (which means I can't review it). Betrayal's main characters are twins that are brilliant but act really stupid at times. They're likable enough but they make really bad choices. And the story is absurd. So back it goes and I'll go on to another Tigner book.

Think ... Indiana Jones
Revisado: 02-23-17
Any additional comments?
I bought this book because I like narrator Colin Mace so much. And he did an excellent job and improved the overall quality and my rating of the book. The story reminds me of Indiana Jones...racing from place to place in search of a treasure. Lots of people die and most of them in really unnecessarily violent ways but you can skip through that. There are lots of interesting facts about Egypt and tombs and rulers, which I enjoyed. Ben is very likable and very competent (ex-SAS man with all the incumbent skills) who has started a school to train people in hostage rescue skills. Then an old friend calls in a favor and the story is off. I would have to say Ben is a terrible judge of character and that I don't believe he is a love-at-first-site kind of guy, but that's the author's choice. So now I'm going to listen to the next one in the series.

Good book+Excellent narrator = Very good audiobook

Any additional comments?
I really enjoyed this book but I do think Colin Mace's performance made a good book very good. Main character Max reminds me of Luther (television show) and my husband, who is English tells me it's because Colin Mace has the same accent. But I think it's more than that. Like Luther, Max never backs down, runs head long into trouble, and keeps going until he figures out what's going on. Well, anyway, if you liked Luther, I think you'll like this book. After reading the reviews and subject of Book 2, I've decided to skip that one and I am already listening to Book 3.

It is The Campus. Secretly created under the administration of President Jack Ryan, its sole purpose is to eliminate terrorists and those who protect them. Officially, it has no connection to the American government - a necessity in a time when those in power consider themselves above such arcane ideals as loyalty, justice, and right or wrong.

I read the reviews and skipped the Blackwood books. But I'd listened to all of the Greaney books and I really like Lou Diamond Phillips so I thought I'd give one a try and I loved it. I don't understand all of the bad reviews. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and will be buying the next Blackwood book in the series.
