Another Hit By Hurwitz and Brick
Revisado: 02-21-22
Orphan X is my favorite series in this genre. Gray Man is a close second. Then over to the Tier One series.
I waited to start listening to this book as I wanted to savor it and I knew it would be hard to stop listening once I had started. I forced myself to take breaks so that I would have something to look forward to.
Evan Smoak’s character has developed and grown a lot. The relationships between supporting characters have depth and are multi-faceted. I love Tommy Stojack. I like to make sure I have not taken a drink when he starts talking. His sayings are over the top and I can picture him in my mind. I love Evan’s interactions with Joey and Dog. And with Peter. The life he leads as the condo-dwelling, socially awkward businessman juxtaposed with Orphan X is well written and engages the listener. Knowing just how and why he is the way he is and understanding why his fellow condo-dwellers don’t have a clue adds to the storyline.
Scott Brick is also my favorite narrator. Ray Porter is also another great narrator. Once a certain artist brings the characters to life well it is hard to think of another person narrating the story.
I concur with Shelley’s review! Highly recommend this book!!

Historia
Before he was the Gray Man, Court Gentry was Sierra Six, the junior member of a CIA action team. In their first mission, they took out a terrorist leader, at a terrible price. Years have passed. The Gray Man is on a simple mission when he sees a ghost: the long-dead terrorist, but he's remarkably energetic for a dead man. A decade of time hasn't changed the Gray Man. He isn't one to leave a job unfinished or a blood debt unpaid.

Another Hit!
Revisado: 02-18-22
I cannot wait for the next book in this series. Jay Snyder brings the characters to life. It was enjoyable to have two plot lines in the same story. The past and the future were woven together nicely. I evidently make comments out loud when the action gets wild and my granddaughter tells me, “You always talk to your books!” That speaks for itself as a testament to how good the story is when one is engrossed to such a degree. Next I will listen and to the new Ophan X book! Another great series.

Historia
It's been five years since Carter Blake parted ways with the top-secret government operation Winterlong. They brokered a deal at the time: he'd keep quiet about what they were doing, and in return he'd be left alone. But news that one of Blake's old allies is dead, a man who agreed to the same deal, means only one thing: something has changed and Winterlong is coming for him.

Enjoy All of the Carter Blake Series
Revisado: 01-07-22
Mason Cross has created a character who is a mix between Jack Reacher and the Gray Man (A favorite). This book evoked emotional stress for me at the corruption of those hunting Blake, and lengths they would go to destroy him. He is a wanderer who is laid back and inscrutable. Blake is not looking for a fight or an in-your-face encounter, but he can hold his own and then some if the situation calls for it. He just does not like injustice or dealing with corrupt people in positions of power. Who does?
With each new book, one sees a depth to Blake’s character emerging more and more. Each book has some small details loosely tied to those found in another book, yet not to the point that each book cannot stand alone.
I agree with the other five star reviews here. Eric Meyers is a top notch narrator too.

Historia
Fifteen years ago, an unidentified killer terrorised Northern Georgia, killing hikers with two shots from a pistol before disposing of the bodies along the remote trails and in the rivers in the vicinity of Blood Mountain. The killer was never brought to justice. Now, Carter Blake has returned home for the first time in many years. The visit stirs old memories, including a girl from school who vanished without a trace.

Carter Blake Series Is A Favorite
Revisado: 01-07-22
Mason Cross is a wonderful author whose Carter Blake series deserves more recognition. I found this series on audible as I searched for new audio books to listen to. I know what I like and what does not interest me. I like well developed characters, a plot that is interesting, makes me think and keeps me engaged. I enjoy the protagonist in this series who is his own person, somewhat flawed, slightly off center with a strong moral compass that guides him in life. Blake reminds me of a wanderer, looking for new experiences, and a peaceful existence, yet he is also driven to seek out adrenaline inducing situations that allow him to use his skills as a former black ops tracker.
Eric Meyers is a very good narrator as well. I recommend this book.

Historia
At 24 years of age, U.S. Army Ranger Sean Parnell was named commander of a forty-man elite infantry platoon - a unit that came to be known as the Outlaws - and was tasked with rooting out Pakistan-based insurgents from a mountain valley along Afghanistan's eastern frontier. Parnell and his men assumed they would be facing a ragtag bunch of civilians, but in May 2006 what started out as a routine patrol through the lower mountains of the Hindu Kush became a brutal ambush.

A heart wrenching story of loyalty and valor
Revisado: 10-29-21
I was not sure how I would like a “real” story of war. Sean Parnell and John Bruning have written an account of war in Afghanistan that draws one in and evokes an emotional response. One feels the love and the loss, the agony and the loyalty and the grit and sacrifice they faced. This band of brothers from diverse walks of life are a testament to honor, valor and service that transcends comprehension. The bond that is forged by facing the most inhumane and soul destroying actions of terrorists and criminals is unlike any most will ever experience. This story helped me to understand why the ravages of war leave so many of our servicemen and women with PTSD. Every life experience, when juxtaposed with the knowledge of such depravity makes it impossible to relate to most people who have not been in war. The ability to survive emotionally and mentally is amazing. As I listened I felt admiration, grief, joy and laughter, indignation, horror, and anger towards some of our own military personnel. I felt rage towards murderers and rapists for the senseless pain and suffering they caused.
I teared up and felt deep sadness at the pain and loss that our men suffered. And I felt gratitude and pride for the way they conducted themselves, with integrity and discipline. I know I could not do what they did. Whether one believes in the political reasons for going to war, the fact that we have men willing to sacrifice so much for others is deserving of gratitude and respect.

Long and slow
Revisado: 10-25-21
It is does not rank up there with Sons or Valor or other books by Brian Andrews and Jeffrey Wilson. Those are action packed and fun to listen to. This has a lot of extraneous information which may appeal more to those who like geography and literature. Personally, the main character did not appeal. His way of speaking and overall mannerisms seemed at odds with his Seal persona. I listened to see if it got better and it was hard to pay attention consistently. I guess it boils down to personal preference in writing style and plot. So this gets an “it is okay” rating.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

Serious, tender, sad and funny
Revisado: 10-06-18
The story draws one in. There are laugh-out-loud moments; the book is serious and anger evoking at times with a gentle sense of love woven throughout the life story of a most peculiar man. The narrator is okay, not great. Once engrossed in the story, I was not distracted by his voice. If I laugh and cry when listening to a story, I consider the author to have done his work well.
