Narration is hard to bear

As a native German, or anyone whose first language is not English, the narration is hard to bear. How dare a publisher hire a narrator who is so arrogantly unconcerned with how names should be pronounced, not to mention whole phrases. Just one example: the German city of Bayreuth, which hosts the annual Wagner festival, is pronounces like the Lebanese city of Beirut. Was there really no one to be found who is a native German speaker? And if not that, how about some coaching? While the voice is pleasant and in its softness fitting to the character of the biography, why does she have to speak so monotonous that you wonder whether it is an automated voice.

The book itself puts together everything that is readily accessible about Merkel. Not many surprises for German readers but a good compilation for an American audience and an introduction into German mentality at the same time. Merkel's story painfully makes us all long for those years when morality was the north star.

How much more I would have enjoyed this book with a good narrator! It’s rare that authors are good narrators. Why not make use of trained actors?

Would you listen to All the Light We Cannot See again? Why?

No, I would rather read the book.

Any additional comments?

I cringed at the awfully bad pronunciation of German and French words and sentences, sometimes barely intelligible. I have listened to other books before where I have enjoyed being drawn into the world of a foreign country by the narrator's professional pronunciation. This one is appallingly bad. I am a native German speaker, and proficient in French.
