An Epic Masterpiece

The Revolutions Podcast is one of the great works of our time. I listen to a lot of history podcasts and this is the one I listen to the most. I really like how the characters drive the narrative of the podcast, and how much Mike goes into detail about the characters in each revolution. The show is obviously meticulously researched, is very well written, and I also appreciate the occasional wry comment tossed in. Revolutions is a show with a vast amount of content, the French Revolution is something like 40 episodes. I think it's fair to say this podcast along with The History of Rome has been the inspiration for many other history podcasts over the years, and is the best place to start in the genre.

Personal Tales of US Presidents

This podcast goes much farther than listing their achievements in government as many Americans would have learned in history class, rather it allows us to get to know them through accounts of their personality, romantic lives, how they were shaped by their environment, and how they handled their struggles in life. The lives of US presidents have been both triumphant and tragic. Some have been very wealthy and some have been nearly broke upon leaving office. This podcast goes into the personal and professional ups and downs of the US presidents, their achievements in office, and their life's journey before and after leaving office.

Philosophy is Fun

Each of the great thinkers and their philosophies are really well explained and in an enjoyable manner. I have really enjoyed learning about the progression from the most ancient philosophies up to the enlightenment thinkers (that's as far as I've gone so far), and about philosophy and religion. The other episodes about random topics are really good too, one of those is for instance "is it ethical to eat meat?". Diving into this show is always a good choice, and it is one of my favorite podcasts.

Life on the Oil Patch

This is a well done podcast about the oil producing areas in West Texas. It goes into some of the history of the area including the many boom and bust periods. The narrator also interviews people about their lives including ranchers, oil workers, others who live in the oil towns, and some of those who have lost a father or a brother on an oil rig, highlighting some of the dangers out in the boomtowns. These are important stories to tell. The sound and narration are also very good as well as the intro/transition music.

This Dude is an Outrageous Maniac

The truth is stranger than fiction. Whitney Cummings does a bang up job taking us through this hilarious account of the life and times of former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, the man who became an icon in Italy, and is known for his wild parties with much younger women, and less than legal business dealings. It is really a wild ride to say the least.

Navigating the Course of American Politics

It has been really interesting learning about how each of the American presidents came into power, what challenges they faced and by extension what challenges the country was facing at the time. This podcast allows us to see how they navigated their presidency, and the motivations of supporters and detractors with more than a little political intrigue.

This is a first person account of far reaching scandals, many of which shape the American Government's policy to this day. Lindsay Graham is a great narrator, and clearly puts a ton of work and research into the show. The music and the structure of the show make for a really immersive experience.
