Historia
Persuasion, Jane Austen's last novel, is a tale of love and marriage told with irony and insight. Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth have met and seperated years before. Their reunion, after the passage or irrecoverable years of their youth, forces a recognition of the false values that drove them apart.

A total banger
Revisado: 11-28-24
My fave Austen so far. Once you begin to follow the main character, Anne, she is so likeable and ends up surrounded by such fun characters, and the level of YEARNING experienced is so exquisite, that it becomes an unalloyed joy to pick up the book and find out what happens next. And of course there’s some classic Austen shocker moments that really kept me listening, even after my commute was done, sitting in my car in the parking lot!
Not my fave narration of all time, partly due to the audio not being as crisp as I like, but the narrator grew on me, and I really like the way you can sometimes hear the smile in her voice when she’s reading.

In this Audible Exclusive production, Academy Award® nominee Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl) narrates one of Jane Austen’s most beloved works, Sense and Sensibility. In this timeless tale of misguided romance and heartbreak, two teenage heroines must overcome the pitfalls of Georgian England’s high society in order to achieve the love and happiness they seek. The admiration that Pike has for Austen’s work is shown clearly through this passionate delivery of Austen’s first published novel.

Historia
For video game fans, the name Blizzard Entertainment was once synonymous with perfection. The renowned company behind classics like Diablo and World of Warcraft was known to celebrate the joy of gaming over all else. What was once two UCLA students' simple mission—to make games they wanted to play—launched an empire with thousands of employees, millions of fans, and billions of dollars. But when Blizzard cancelled a buzzy project in 2013, it gave Bobby Kotick, the infamous CEO of corporate parent Activision, the excuse he needed to start cracking down on Blizzard's proud autonomy.

Fantastic Narrator
Revisado: 10-18-24
I’ve assumed that I was too stupid for audiobooks for a while. I have pretty high reading comprehension, but audiobooks…I struggle to pay attention for more than 15 seconds. Or so I thought??? I found this audiobook EXTREMELY listenable. The narrator has fantastic diction, and varies his tone constantly. As an example, you can tell when he’s reading a quote, because he had a distinct “quote read” voice; this makes the audiobook a lot easier to understand!
The book itself is kind of a hoot. The author finds the narrative threads and keeps it interesting. I found myself vocalizing IRL many times in shock at something that he revealed. I’m not a certified elite gamer, but the book is definitely enhanced by some surface level knowledge of video games. For example, I’ve never played a Diablo, but when the book mentions they started working on Diablo 3 all the way back in 2000, I was like…oh no lol.
I think this book could become a future classic, too. Compare Blizzard to companies like Boeing or Blackberry - there are obvious lessons to be learned, despite the fact that we seem to keep not learning them. This book is a great reference of how and why the video game industry goes sour, but the pattern echoes across all engineering and technology companies.

Historia
Received opinion holds that art is culturally determined and relative. We are told that whether a picture, a movement, a text, or sound qualifies as a "work of art" largely depends on social attitudes and convention. Drawing on examples ranging from Paleolithic cave paintings to modern pop music and building on the ideas of James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, Gilles Deleuze, Carl Jung, and others, J.F. Martel argues that art is an inborn human phenomenon that precedes the formation of culture and even society.

The book is read by the author, who has fantastic diction and a soothing voice. He puts an extra stank on French words and names.

Tornadoes, cyclones, tsunamis… Weather can be deadly – especially when it strikes without warning. Millions of Americans could soon find themselves at the mercy of violent weather if the public data behind lifesaving storm alerts gets privatized for personal gain. In his first Audible Original feature, New York Times best-selling author and journalist Michael Lewis delivers hard-hitting research on not-so-random weather data – and how Washington plans to release it.

Big Ups
Revisado: 04-29-19
This was my first Michael Lewis book, though I'd seen the Big Short so I was vaguely aware of his form of storytelling - communicate the crisis by exploring the lives of the people affecting it and affected by it. It's an honest to goodness 10/10 for me. I thought it would be boring nonfiction, but it's short, sweet, and a little bit scary. Very important info surrounding how climate data is managed in the US. I'm about halfway through Moneyball right now and constantly losing the thread due to the amount of characters the fact that I don't know anything about baseball, but Coming Storm keeps it tight and approachable to a layman.

Historia
Claude Shannon was a tinkerer, a playful wunderkind, a groundbreaking polymath, and a digital pioneer whose insights made the Information Age possible. He constructed fire-breathing trumpets and customized unicycles, outfoxed Vegas casinos, and built juggling robots, but he also wrote the seminal text of the Digital Revolution. That work allowed scientists to measure and manipulate information as objectively as any physical object. His work gave mathematicians and engineers the tools to bring that world to pass.

The book is great, but I hated the reader
Revisado: 02-03-19
No offense to the guy that read this book, but I hated everything about his voice and the way he read it. It made an otherwise engaging story incredibly difficult to stomach. I wish I'd bought the hard copy.

Very useful for taking the test!
Revisado: 02-03-19
I forgot to review this book when I used it, but it was very useful to preparing for the test when I didn't have much time. I also loved that the author read it himself. I believe there is a new test bank now, but the questions don't change by much, and the general knowledge is very useful. I'll return to this author if I decide to upgrade my license :)

Been one of my favorite books since childhood (so overflowing with magic and charm), so I was worried that no reader would be able to bring all the voices of the colorful characters to life. Jenny Sterlin does a heck of a job!
