Historia
Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

terrible quality and production values,
Revisado: 11-15-21
this is it a good book, but the audio is absolutely terrible. between chapters are pauses and there's what I think is supposed to be static snow on a TV screen, and then ends with a short whine which I think is the sound of a TV powering down. it's just really annoying. The quality overall is not very good either, it sounds like it was recorded from a recording playing over a loudspeaker.
the narrator's use of accents is also pretty problematic these days. when Japanese characters are speaking, it's really stereotypical. Like "Me so horny", that bad.
I wish there was a better version of the audiobook.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

My favorite book and now audiobook. Well acted.
Revisado: 09-05-21
I have loved this book since I read it as a teen. The writing is so complex and so fascinating. the voice acting is actually really good too. I only complaint is stupid inconsistent. sometimes a character speaks with one actor, and then they'll be spoken by the narrator instead in other scenes. that's my only complaint

I had to stop listening to this after about an hour. I don't know why author's think every young adult novel needs to be a first person narration by some whiney brat who doesn't actually sound anything like a real teenager.

“Shy” Hunt and the tech team from McAllen Integrations thought they’d have an easy job - set up environmental systems for the brand new Hasanova Data Solutions colony, built on the abandoned ruins of a complex known as “Charybdis”. There are just two problems: The colony belongs to the Iranian state, so diplomacy is strained at best, and the complex is located above a series of hidden caves that contain deadly secrets.

Historia
By the 1890s, Wilmington was North Carolina’s largest city and a shining example of a mixed-race community. It was a bustling port city with a burgeoning African American middle class and a Fusionist government of Republicans and Populists that included black aldermen, police officers, and magistrates. There were successful black-owned businesses and an African American newspaper, The Record. But across the state - and the South - white supremacist Democrats were working to reverse the advances made by former slaves and their progeny.

History doesn't repeat, but it rhymes.
Then as now, enemies of progress use the "big lie" to incite violence against their enemies to protect their entrenched positions in society.
This history serves as a stark reminder about where the road we now travel will inevitably lead us.

Historia
Donald Trump isn't a despot. But he is increasingly acting like the "despot's apprentice", an understudy in authoritarian tactics that threaten to erode American democracy, including attacking the press, threatening rule of law by firing those who investigate his alleged wrongdoings, using nepotism to staff the White House, and countless other techniques. Donald Trump is borrowing tactics from the world's dictators and despots.

maybe we weren't so alarmist after all.
Revisado: 04-27-21
The author thinks that we were all alarmist for calling Trump a despot or an authoritarian because our democracy was so robust it wouldn't allow it to happen. Hard to believe how much things have changed in such a short period of time.
I'd be very curious with the author to to say now that the depth of the Republican anti-democratic values have become apparent, and how the guardrails of democracy that the author extols have utterly failed under the Trump presidency
I think the main value of this book is seeing how naive the media and political class were in the lead up to Trump presidency.
They seem to have not expected how giddily the Republican party was ready to tear down the guardrails protecting us from authoritarianism. The evidence of the past 40 years should have told them otherwise, but they I chose instead to believe the lies we tell ourselves about how great our country is.
It's sad and terrifying. it shows no signs of stopping or slowing down. God help us at the Republican party picks a competent leader next time. they blew open the door and are holding it open, ready to usher in their next despot

Historia
During the final three years of the Obama administration, Richard Stengel, the former editor of Time magazine and an Under Secretary of State, was the single person in government tasked with unpacking, disproving, and combating both ISIS's messaging and Russian disinformation. Then, in 2016, as the presidential election unfolded, Stengel watched as Donald Trump used disinformation himself, weaponizing the grievances of Americans who felt overlooked. In fact, Stengel quickly came to see how all three players had used the same playbook: ISIS sought to make Islam great again....

Historia
Ataegina was an isolated world of medieval castles, varied cultures, and conquests, vibrant until the demons rose and spread relentless destruction. Swarms of lethal creatures with black husks, murderous claws, barbed tails, and dreaded “tooth-tongues” raged through the lowlands, killing 90 percent of the planet’s population. Terrified survivors fled to hidden mountain keeps where they eke out a meager existence. When a trio of young warriors discovers a new weapon, they see a chance to end this curse. To save humanity, they must fight.

Fantastic take on the franchise.
Revisado: 02-08-21
i loved it. my only complaint is the voice affect for one of the characters is ridiculous sounding and super annoying. otherwise it's great. It's a great spin on the franchise.
Edit: I had to come back after I saw so many reviews complaining about feminism or something. I have no idea what the hell they're talking about. I guess having a strong female protagonist is somehow derogatory towards men? Or I guess because the woman wants to be something more than what her particular culture want her to be? like seriously, these guys are complaining about a woman wanting to be a warrior and not wanting to have kids.
You got to wonder just how thin skinned some of reviewers have to be to twist the narrative themselves to make up a reason to complain about whatever cultural war nonsense they're directing their impotent rage at today.
So yeah. It's a good book. Don't let the anti-feminist circle jerking in the reviews turn you off

Have you ever been told to smile more, been teased about your accent or had your name pronounced incorrectly? If so, you’ve probably already faced bias in your everyday life. We like to believe that we are all fair-minded and egalitarian, but we all carry biases that we might not even be aware of. We might believe that we live in a post-racial society, but racial tension and inequality is pernicious and pervasive. We might believe that gender inequality is a thing of the past, but it is still ubiquitous.

one of the most important books I've ever read.
Revisado: 10-24-20
this is a book that should be required listening or reading for everyone on the planet. we are all biased, every one of us. the science and data shared in this book provide plenty of proof. it's up to us to accept that and to work within that system to improve it. denial of the facts is a chronic condition in our society. we need to accept these implicit biases or else we cannot move forward as a species.
