Incredibly touching story, beautifully written and narrated. If the second book is even half as good as the first...HOLY COW!

Even a nomimal degree of research into WW-2 in general, or the OSS in particular could've prevented the glaring historical inaccuracies found in this novel. EXAMPLE: An American "nurse"" landing on a Japanese held island using a cover story of "searching for medical supplies " to relay covert messages? Really?! To whom might the message be intended? How would she get there? An American ship would never have been allowed within 500 miles of a Japanese base. If an American nurse somehow DID manage to land, the very best she could've hoped for would've been interment for the rest of the war, wirh being "employed" as a "comfort girl" for the Japanese troops a far more likely outcome.

As for the story itself, historical inaccuracies aside, even the "love story" was sacchcarine and predictable. The dialogue was wooden, and even January Lavoie's superb voice talents were unable to overcome the weak source material. Kirby Haywood, the bland male narrator, never had a chance.

The premise offered so much potential. Sadly, the prose fell well short in its delivery.

One might expect that if a novel's principle character is Southern aristocrat and the setting is in the South that the narrator would have some ability to affect a genteel Southern accent. Certainly if I were narrating a novel about Wall Street, it would be inappropriate for me to affect the accent of a Brooklyn taxi driver for 90% of the novel's characters.

I miss Rene Auberjonois, may he rest in peace! Even Scott Brick did a better job with his narrative attempts in older Pendergast novels.

Had this recording been my introduction to the Pendergast series rather than its 21st installment, I would not be seek out another!

I am disappointed!
