Terrible dialogue
Revisado: 09-08-24
It’s hard to know where to begin with how awful this was and so long. The story was completely unbelievable, the women particularly were particularly badly written, this guy really could not write women at all, the dialogue was ridiculous, maybe it was the translation? Could have been better in French, but no one speaks like this. No one falls madly in love after 1 meeting. And why are these girls throwing themselves at this older man? The worst was none of the women characters had any ambition beyond being his wife, mother of children and muse 🤢 I can’t understand how no one realized how awful it was in the many hours that they put this together. I guess they lost situational awareness. I gave up with 8 hours still to go, I suggest that anyone else just gives it a miss.

Historia
Four older women have a lifelong friendship of the best kind: loving, practical, frank, and steadfast. But when Sylvie dies, the ground shifts dangerously for the remaining three. They are Jude, a once-famous restaurateur; Wendy, an acclaimed public intellectual; and Adele, a renowned actress now mostly out of work. Struggling to recall exactly why they’ve remained close all these years, the grieving women gather at Sylvie’s old beach house - not for festivities this time, but to clean it out before it is sold. Can they survive together without her?

Sad and dull
Revisado: 07-14-24
Very depressing book. I didn’t find a character I liked or a redeeming feature. The dog doesn’t die, but the endless passages about it being old and sad were relentless.

Historia
It is an ordinary Monday and harried London literary agent Emma is flying out of the door as usual. Preoccupied with work and her ever growing to-do list, she fails to notice her lovely husband Dan seems bereft, her son can barely meet her eye, and her daughter won’t go near her. Even the dog seems sad.

Very disappointing
Revisado: 11-08-23
Just hated this book, read first part and last chapter. So many reasons, someone who works in publishing writing about publishing, busy London mum, losing each other mid marriage, but really tired of working women having to apologize for having a genuine work crisis whilst their husband sulks about forgetting an anniversary.

Great book Terrible Narrator
Revisado: 04-23-23
This was a really interesting, well written, beautifully plotted story about grief and loss with an interesting twist, which I would have loved it it hadn't have been for the narrator. Ellen Archer is an American actress who reads American books wonderfully, but she and I assume the dialect coach (if they didn't have one they should have, but if they did then they did a bad job) who helped with this really really struggled with the different accents in this story, it was almost comical, such a huge pity as it this almost rendered it unlistenable. I don't even know how someone managed to produce something this bad. I would love to listen to more Kate Atkinson but I will be taking careful note of who they have narrating the story before I download another one.
