Historia
Experience a bold take on this classic autobiography as it’s performed by Oscar-nominated Laurence Fishburne. In this searing classic autobiography, originally published in 1965, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and Black empowerment activist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Human Rights movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American dream and the inherent racism in a society that denies its non-White citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time.

A lot of content and an excellent reading
Revisado: 03-10-21
For someone who had no real prior knowledge of Malcolm X, it is best to get it straight from the source. The fundamental chunks of the autobiography break down into childhood, hustling, prison, Nation of Islam, and travel to the Middle East and Africa. Through these various chapters you hear the thoughts and reflections of how these elements developed his character and perspective. At times, it is tough to listen to what can be considered inciteful and fiery speech, yet it is important to take it in the context of his whole life and book. The reading by Laurence Fishburne brings the words to life in an engaging and modern way that feels true to the character and the history.

Historia
When “Renaissance runner” (New York Times) Alexi Pappas - Olympic athlete, actress, filmmaker, and writer - was four years old, her mother died by suicide, drastically altering the course of Pappas’s life and setting her on a search for female role models. When her father signed his bereaved daughter up for sports teams as a way to keep her busy, female athletes became the first women Pappas looked up to, and her Olympic dream was born. At the same time, Pappas had big creative dreams, too: She wanted to make movies, write, and act.

Fantastic sharing of a personal journey
Revisado: 01-22-21
Great job Alexi! This is actually the first book I can say I preordered. I got in on Audible as I am always greatly impressed when an author not only writes their book, but then also takes the time to thoughtfully record the audiobook. Hearing the words come directly from the author sounds so much more genuine and impactful. I knew I wanted to read a book by a great runner, but I got so much more. Alexi talks about her journey of becoming an Olympian, filmmaker, adult and the relationships she's had along the way. An honest reflection of the things that have influenced her journey, and at times heartbreaking recollection of the mental health and atheltic stigmas that have effected her and the people around her. There are a lot of great thoughts and relatable moments that make the words not only her story, but part of your own. Although there are tough moments to listen to, the end result is feeling connected to a person you've probably never met, and feel like you're both better because of it.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

There is something for everyone in this memoir
Revisado: 12-20-20
I don't think the description does this book justice. This book encompassed so many different themes, thoughts and feelings that the description never would have provided. The narrator delivers the text in an easily digestible way and does not sway the weight of the words any more or less appropriate than they warrant. At times some parts seemed like they must have been fiction, before reminding myself that this is a memoir by someone living in the same country, at the same time, as me. At times this made it difficult to listen to, not because of the writing or production, but because of the sheer density of the recounted memories. I think there is something for everyone to think about or learn in this memoir.

Historia
From author and illustrator Sophie Lucido Johnson comes Love Without Sex, a fascinating three-part Audible Original that explores nontraditional relationships and shows how breaking down stereotypes and misconceptions around love can help us all build stronger, healthier connections to one another. In our culture, the rom-com boy-meets-girl romantic set up is by and large the most persistent love story.

Informative and varied, but sometimes repetitive

It was a good listen, though at times repetitive. The narration was easy to listen to and the content digestible. It is not a textbook on these topics but a sharing of stories and relationships.

Historia
Man’s Search for Meaning is the chilling yet inspirational story of Viktor Frankl’s struggle to hold on to hope during the unspeakable horrors of his years as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

Trigger warning - but good read
Revisado: 09-17-20
At times tough to listen to but a story with its ups and downs. Can listen into thoughts and experiences of someone through the story, without it being overwhelmingly personal. the narration takes a few minutes to get used to, but then is an easier listen.

For as long as they can remember, Cyrus Grace Dunham felt like a visitor in their own body. Their life was a series of imitations—lovable little girl, daughter, sister, young gay woman—until their profound sense of alienation became intolerable. Moving between Grace and Cyrus, Dunham brings us inside the chrysalis of gender transition, asking us to bear witness to an uncertain and exhilarating process that troubles our most basic assumptions about who we are and how we are constituted.

Impactful sharing of a story
Revisado: 07-20-20
I think audiobooks narrated by thr author mean that much more. There is a weight to the words that resonates stronger. This book shares an experience that many do not have, and does so in a way that can be relatable for any reader. Leaves a reader feeling like they want to hear more but is a compact enough read to stay engaged for the entirety.

More Impactful than I thought
Revisado: 07-15-20
I didn't have too much prior experience with Trevor Noah, but figured he'd be pretty funny. Telling his story told a story about him, South Africa and people. It gave a vivid picture of what growing up in South Africa could be like, and the tenacity that people can have. It was a great listen, with almost no lulls and consistently funny and inspiring.
