Historia
When we think of fungi, we likely think of mushrooms. But mushrooms are only fruiting bodies, analogous to apples on a tree. Most fungi live out of sight, yet make up a massively diverse kingdom of organisms that supports and sustains nearly all living systems. Fungi provide a key to understanding the planet on which we live, and the ways we think, feel, and behave.

Historia
1860: As the clash between the states rolls slowly to a boil, Elizabeth Packard, housewife and mother of six, is facing her own battle. The enemy sits across the table and sleeps in the next room. Her husband of 21 years is plotting against her because he feels increasingly threatened - by Elizabeth’s intellect, independence, and unwillingness to stifle her own thoughts. So Theophilus makes a plan to put his wife back in her place. One summer morning, he has her committed to an insane asylum.

Outstanding!
Revisado: 10-11-22
Extremely well written, this true story reveals the struggle between truth and fiction. The truth must always stand up for itself as it endures constant attacks. That a woman — Elizabeth Packard — is the servant of truth is consistent with history. It brings to mind many other injustices that women have suffered, not the least of which are the attacks on Mary Magdalene by the general public and the Apostle Peter. Yet the truth persists.
Bravo!
The narration is very well done. I was taken in totally by the drama, at times disheartened and at other times exultant. I love that Elizabeth outlived her two accusers!

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

As a botanist and professor of plant ecology, Robin Wall Kimmerer has spent a career learning how to ask questions of nature using the tools of science. As a Potawatomi woman, she learned from elders, family, and history that the Potawatomi, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers.

Reading Braiding Sweetgrass felt like being transfused with the ancient, time-tested wisdom of the indigenous peoples. Out with the old, in with the new. No. Out with the new, in with the old. Some deeply buried part of me resonated with joy but also with sorrow in acknowledgment of the losses from colonialism to everyone, the indigenous people, nonhumans, the planet, and perhaps the biggest losers of all: those of us who allowed ourselves to be distracted from the truth of who we are.
My first exposure to Braiding Sweetgrass was through Audible, narrated by the author, and it was such a pleasure that I committed to buying the book so that I could savor the exquisite writing. That I did, and I fear I have become a born-again recruiter in hope that the whole world will read and/or listen to this book.

Well balanced. Really enjoyed it.
Revisado: 06-23-21
This was very easy to listen to, and it was a mix of the author’s personal experience and research of history of public lands and their management. The research was really helpful to me, as I have followed the public lands issues for decades. The author, I thought, kept his reporting neutral, aligning with preserving public lands only with solid reasoning. The author’s personal experiences were entertaining, at times at the cost of the author’s father, but the good humor was evident. This is a very human story, and it does not touch on some of the bigger issues such as the inherent values of non-human life. Nevertheless it makes a strong case for (1) getting out into the wild lands, (2) loving them and finding out who you are in the bigger context of the world, and (3) advocating for public land preservation.

Historia
From Andre Agassi, one of the most beloved athletes in history and one of the most gifted men ever to step onto a tennis court, a beautiful, haunting autobiography. Agassi brings a near-photographic memory to every pivotal match and every relationship. Never before has the inner game of tennis and the outer game of fame been so precisely limned. In clear, taut prose, Agassi evokes his loyal brother, his wise coach, his gentle trainer, all the people who help him regain his balance and find love at last with Stefanie Graf.

That’s how I describe André Agassi. Never knew much about tennis, but I made a point of watching matches he played in. Now I understand what I saw in him watching him play.
I really enjoyed the crisp writing, the open honesty, and all the many surprises woven throughout the book. Two favorite stories capture so much of Agassi’s life: his dad begging him to quit, and André shaving his newborn son’s head. Tears and laughter: the stuff of life!
The narration by Erik Davies is superb. He stepped into the exquisite dialogue as if he were Agassi.
The only thing left for me to do now is to wish I could meet all the people who played a part in Agassi’s life.

I really enjoyed listening to Tom’s story. I’m a recreational runner and have much respect and admiration for serious runners. Many incidents were familiar to me and told with humor. I also enjoyed how Tom portrayed other characters — especially his family. It felt as though I was getting to know some great people.

Historia
While researching the toxic and addictive properties of sugar for Fat Chance, Robert Lustig made an alarming discovery - our pursuit of happiness is being subverted by a culture of addiction and depression from which we may never recover. Dopamine is the "reward" neurotransmitter that tells our brains we want more; yet every substance or behavior that releases dopamine in the extreme leads to addiction. Serotonin is the "contentment" neurotransmitter that tells our brains we don't need any more; yet its deficiency leads to depression.

Revisado: 01-18-18
Lustig reveals how we got ourselves into the mess we’re in. It’s time to pay attention to how corporations are profiting from their not-so-secret efforts to keep consumers fat and, well, anything but happy. A must-read.
