Historia
In the early 20th century, one of the most famous women in America was Emma Goldman. Born in Russia in the late 19th century, Goldman had come to the United States and quickly grew attracted to anarchy and socialism. While many simply grumbled about the Gilded Age in private, Goldman was a woman of action, from being involved in the attempted assassination of tycoon Henry Clay Frick to publishing anarchist journals and passing around information about contraception.

The fight never ends!
Revisado: 02-16-25
Although this is about events of over 100 years ago, it could be today! The fight for democracy is never ending. The story was good. I’ll be at short. The narration was very monotone. It would’ve been nice to have a female. Reading Emma Goldman’s narrative.

Historia
Data is fundamental to the modern world. From economic development, to healthcare, to education and public policy, we rely on numbers to allocate resources and make crucial decisions. But because so much data fails to take into account gender, treating men as the default and women as atypical, bias and discrimination are baked into our systems. And women pay tremendous costs for this bias in time, money, and often with their lives. Celebrated feminist advocate Caroline Criado Perez investigates the shocking root cause of gender inequality and research in Invisible Women.

Must read for men & women
Revisado: 02-12-25
I thought I knew the history and depths of inequality for women well. This pointed out so many injustices and oversights with male default policies that I didn't even realize as an RN and a US military veteran of over three decades! I understand so much better now why it has been so difficult to be a woman in this world! From inadequate medical dosing to car seats and seat belts, to public transportation, to one-size-fits-all all uniforms and flak jackets! On a near daily basis, women have to endure or overlook so many policies and practices designed around a 170 lb white male. All of this makes our lives more difficult while working to be beyond mediocre to fit in a world designed for men and by men.

Extremely poignantly written! Profound, graphic verbal descriptions of scenes and feelings! Would love to see a movie made of it so more people can appreciate the hardships of immigrants!

Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

When I was a young ANC at Fort Bragg, NC in the early 80s, I had the fortune of being mentored by several Vietnam ANC veterans. They were all knowledgeable, kind, and caring. I could however see they had emotional wounds carried over from their time in Vietnam which they seldom talked about. It is so enlightening and refreshing to read their story so accurately depicted.

History lesson and a cautionary tale
Revisado: 02-01-24
This book is on par with Barbara Tuchman‘s, March of Folly. It is important to revisit and re-examine history and the motives of the people writing history. Is also important to have a woman and or minorities’s perspective on our history. In the past, almost all of our history was written by white males.

Historia
Laura Dern and Diane Ladd always had a close relationship, but the stakes were raised when Diane developed a sudden life-threatening illness. Diane’s doctor prescribed long walks to build back her lung capacity. The exertion was challenging, and Laura soon learned the best way to distract her mom was to get her talking and telling stories. Their conversations along the way began to break down the traditional barriers between mothers and daughters.

Through the last 150 years of American history—from the post-reconstruction South and the mythic stories of cowboys in the West, to the present-day controversy over NFL protests and the backlash against the rise of women in politics—Ijeoma Oluo exposes the devastating consequences of white male supremacy on women, people of color, and white men themselves. Mediocre investigates the real costs of this phenomenon in order to imagine a new white male identity, one free from racism and sexism.

I very much enjoyed the historical background of much of our white male patriarchy history and the negative consequences of it for all of us—to include white males. Additionally the rate of speech by the author was the first time I was able to listen to a book (of more than a 100 that I’ve listened to) at the normal 1.0 speed without having to speed it up! Thank you!
