Historia
Even though Agatha Raisin loathes amateur dramatics, her friend Mrs. Bloxby, the vicar's wife, has persuaded her to support the local pantomime. Stifling a yawn at the production of Babes in the Woods, Agatha watches as the baker, playing an ogre, struts and threatens on the stage. Then a trapdoor opens… followed by a scream and then silence. Surely, this isn't the way the scene was rehearsed?

mispronounced, pauses & voices the same
Revisado: 04-09-24
Story was fine. Narrator mispronounced the town. She paused after quotes so that I really noticed "he said," "she howled," "he wondered," etc. And, as other people have said, voices all were the same as narration.

A Must Listen for the Grieving

Strange mixture
Revisado: 02-19-24
Strange mixture of comedy & grief. Heart-felt & interesting, probably beneficial for those who are mourning. In the intro, he says that he shows pictures but he will describe everything. Not true. All through the monologue he's showing the audience things & the listener is left out, wondering what they look like.

Fascinating
Revisado: 02-03-24
I had no idea Hedy Lemarr led such an interesting life. She was brilliant, strong, honorable, beautiful, & a talented actor. The book was very well written. I only wish it had continued to the rest of her life - but it ended on a high note.

it was canned & predictable, formulaic. I stopped listening halfway through. The performance was ok, but the story was not well-written.

Historia
Kristin Neff changed how we talk about self-care with her enormously popular first book, Self-Compassion. Now, 10 years and many studies later, she expands her body of work to explore a brand-new take on self-compassion. Although kindness and self-acceptance allow us to be with ourselves as we are, in all our glorious imperfection, the desire to alleviate suffering at the heart of this mindset isn't always gentle, sometimes it's fierce.

important work, mediocre reading
Revisado: 05-10-22
This is a very important book. Women, especially, need to read this.
The narrator sounded like she was just reading it, not speaking to me. Pauses before section titles were not long enough, so it always took me a moment to realize it was a title & not an odd, incomplete sentence. The reading in parts, such as the research in chapter 2, was especially dry, & boring - & therefore seemingly unimportant. Research results may be dry, but don't drone on; talk to me about it!

usual great writing
Revisado: 02-15-22
Exciting story, with the usual Crichton attention to detail. Air safety, office politics, union scrutiny... by the middle you won't be able to stop listening.
The only let-down was the reading. It was OK, but she kept ending sentences with lifted tone, so I didn't know it was the end of a sentence. I had to struggle to focus on the story & ignore it.

Historia
Flight attendant Taylor Tippett had just finished beverage service and was sitting in the back of a Boeing 737 when she had a revelation: How can I show kindness to these passengers if I can’t show it to myself? She grabbed a tiny notepad and a Sharpie and wrote: “Be kind to yourself.” Before she had time to think about it, Taylor taped the note to a window, posted a picture, and then left the slip of paper in a seat-back pocket for someone on the next flight to find. And soon what started as a personal project to encourage herself and others became a viral sensation.

This is specifically Christian. There's a lot of talk about Jesus. Great, if you follow that tradition. Not so much for others. There should have been info on this in the synopsis. I had to regretfully stop & remove from device.

It’s tough to be a buffoon when the Age of Reason is trying to downsize your job. When the King’s Fool dies unexpectedly, a professional buffoon tries to move up the ranks and grab the top slot. But the politics involved in becoming a court jester are no laughing matter. The rules of becoming the top fool are simple: The winner is the one who performs the most outrageous act. Our buffoon and his fellows struggle for supremacy in a profession that is heading for extinction.

performance was wooden
Revisado: 12-19-20
Terrible delivery. Slow and careful, everything read with the same tone. I'm pretty sure the writing was rambling, but it may have been the way it was read. I found the informal dialog odd in the context of the story.

Historia
On The Power of Vulnerability, Dr. Brown offers an invitation and a promise - that when we dare to drop the armor that protects us from feeling vulnerable, we open ourselves to the experiences that bring purpose and meaning to our lives. Here she dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and reveals that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage.

Excellent, detailed advice for living wholeheartedly. She is funny, engaging & honest. It was fun listening to her talk to a live audience. On the other hand, it was frustrating when I knew she was making a face or doing something and I couldn't see it. Most of the time she explained what she was doing for people listening.
