Historia
The cod is a large, ugly fish that spends its life with its big mouth wide open for food. For centuries, so many cod lived in the Atlantic Ocean they couldn’t swim without bumping into each other. They were so plentiful that they became the most important fish in many cultures. Best-selling author Mark Kurlansky brings history to life with this entertaining story of how a single fish changed the world.

Baby version. Very short story of the cod.
Revisado: 08-25-24
A real disappointment. I’ve enjoyed Kurlansky’s books, but this isn’t worth the short time it takes to listen to it. At a little over an hour, it certainly isn’t worth a credit. Very much a surface treatment of cod. Narrator even sounded bored!

Historia
May 1912. After the previous year’s deadly heatwave, it’s been an uneventful spring in Littleton Cotterell. Though for Lady Hardcastle and her fiercely loyal lady’s maid Flo, at least there are the provincial delights of the village’s inaugural art exhibition—and bicycle race—to look forward to. But at the exhibition opening, there’s a panicked shout of ‘Fire!’ In the confusion, the main attraction—an extremely expensive book—is stolen from under everyone’s nose, as is a valuable painting lent by Sir Hector Farley-Stroud.

I rather enjoyed some of the earlier books, but no longer. Gave up on this one about halfway through. The “bad guys” were obvious almost from the moment they came on the scene. No mystery, little atmosphere, and the main characters have become boring.

A man dies with his hand on a radio dial. A distinguished aristocrat finds murder at the opening night of a play. A cryptogram produces death in an English churchyard. Death on the Air and Other Stories serves as the perfect introduction to Ngaio Marsh and her creation, Inspector Roderick Alleyn, or as a nostalgic journey for her many fans.

A,little disappointing, but mostly a good listen.
Revisado: 12-16-23
The best pieces weren’t the stories. The essays on Allyn and Troy, along with the concluding letter to a would-be writer, were great. The stories with Allyn were good, but I think Ngaio Marsh is seen/heard better in longer works. If you have not read any of her books and were disappointed in these short pieces, try some of her longer pieces.

Historia
1948. After serving with the French Resistance during the Second World War, codenamed La Chatte Noire, Phryne Fisher escaped to Australia in search of sunshine, butter and peace. So she’s furious when tragedy intrudes upon her newfound tranquillity and she discovers a dead man on Somerton Beach - well-dressed, good-looking and with a secret smile on his lips. The police are baffled as to his identity and cause of death - not to mention the scrap of paper bearing the words TAMAM SHUD found upon him, and the coded message in the book from which it was torn.

Very disappointing.
Revisado: 09-28-22
I was delighted to see a new title that wasn’t a collection of short stories and I didn’t look at the length. This is not a book. It’s barely a novelette. It feels more like an intro to a novel that was born prematurely. No character development, no building suspense, just an introduction and an abrupt, disappointing conclusion. The mature Phryne appears to be too much for the author.

From the inimitable bestselling author Thomas Cahill, another popular history - this one focusing on how the innovations of the Renaissance and the Reformation changed the Western world. A truly revolutionary audiobook. In Volume VI of his acclaimed Hinges of History series, Thomas Cahill guides us through the thrilling period of the Renaissance and the Reformation (the late fourteenth to the early seventeenth century), so full of innovation and cultural change that the Western world would not experience its like again until the twentieth century.

Historia
When a London businessman retires early and buys a Tudor mansion, he’s quite surprised - and perhaps even a little pleased (retirement being pretty boring) - to find a skeleton hidden in a secret room in the house. The skeleton appears to be more than 150 years old, so the local police leave it to the homeowner to solve the mystery. The police are much more interested in solving a local, modern murder. Somehow the two deaths are connected. First published in 1967, this is Aird’s only non-Inspector Sloan mystery, and a complete triumph.

Of course, it always helps to start with a good book, and Aird’s rather unusual mystery provides excellent characters in an enjoyable plot. The reader gives life to the characters, the locale, and the search for answers to solve an old mystery, as well as a modern one.

Historia
In Behind the Throne, historian Adrian Tinniswood uncovers the reality of five centuries of life at the English court, taking the listener on a remarkable journey from one Queen Elizabeth to another and exploring life as it was lived by clerks and courtiers and clowns and crowned heads: the power struggles and petty rivalries, the tension between duty and desire, the practicalities of cooking dinner for thousands and of ensuring the king always won when he played a game of tennis.

Maybe better in print
Revisado: 11-02-19
I really expected to enjoy this book, but I found it dull and disorganized. The author calls it a “domestic history” and there is detail about household expenses and general lifestyle of royals. Unfortunately, there was precious little about how the royal households were actually organized, much less about the people who did the work to keep things running, or even those who directed those people. As a recorded book, it drags. Not because the reader did a bad job - he just didn’t have much to work with.

I enjoy listening to these
Revisado: 06-28-19
The performance by Peter Hoskins is excellent and the stories are interesting with some humor. The author includes a good bit of background material that makes them even more interesting to me. Best mysteries? No. A good, light book to listen to, yes. Very much so.
The publishers make the point that the attitudes toward women and aboriginals were typical of the period - those attitudes can be annoying. It doesn’t spoil the books and Upfield shows a degree of admiration for Aboriginals and includes strong women in many of his casts.

Too long
Revisado: 02-09-16
I enjoyed this book at first, but then got really tired of it. I found the two main characters interesting, and the plot seemed to offer interest. Unfortunately, the plot got stuck somewhere in the middle and the author seemed to be searching for a lead even more than her detectives. I gave up about two hours from the end when she pulled in yet another red herring.
I may try another entry in the series in print, where it's easier to skip around. I did like most of the characters, and I like the premise of the series.
Michael Page did a good job with the reading.
