Historia
A gospel, as ancient and authentic as any of the gospels that the Christian bible contains, was buried deep in the Egyptian desert after an edict was sent out in the 4th century to have all copies of it destroyed. Fortunately, some rebel monks were wise enough to refuse - and thanks to their disobedience and spiritual bravery, we have several manuscripts of the only gospel that was written in the name of a woman: The Gospel of Mary Magdalene.

Decent book
Revisado: 03-29-25
I’ve read several books on the gnostic gospels. This one is my least favorite. The ones she uses as source material are more informative, and, in my unqualified opinion, better. But comparing anyone to Armstrong, Bourgeault, King or Le Loup is unfair. This book is much more a personal reflection on the gospel. All of the opinions expressed are valid and well grounded in the text. I was a little put off by the references to some minor characters in what I thought was a dismissive manner: “Angry billboard guy”’ “Quiet old guy”, “Allez oop.” In a spiritual book such demeaning objectification undercuts the message of inter being that should always be at the core.
In short, it’s an admirable achievement and worthy of reading, but maybe not worth reading first.

Historia
David Sheff's story is a first: a teenager's addiction from the parent's point of view, a real-time chronicle of the shocking descent into substance abuse and the gradual emergence into hope.
Before meth, Sheff's son, Nic, was a varsity athlete, honor student, and award-winning journalist. After meth, he was a trembling wraith who stole money from his eight-year-old brother and lived on the streets. With haunting candor, Sheff traces the first warning signs, the attempts at rehabilitation, and, at last, the way past addiction. He shows us that, whatever an addict's fate, the rest of the family must care for one another, too, lest they become addicted to addiction.

Just okay
Revisado: 09-14-19
It is just my opinion, but I felt that the author and narrator both fell short of conveying authenticity of the experience. Too much time was spent on digressing into cute scenes that felt contrived and detracted from the visceral elements that would have made the story more affective. The author’s account of working the Twelve Steps felt superficial to me. I never felt any true embrace of powerlessness. I’m happy that the family has survived but I didn’t get any sense of a spiritual transformation that would have made this story truly worth the telling. Again, just my opinion.

Historia
Chris Webb, an Anglican priest and retreat house director, wants us all to enter into that kingdom and to experience its freedom. Written with verve, depth, and uncontainable joy, God-Soaked Life invites us to live in the reality of God's presence in our everyday lives. It's an invitation into the community of God's people, into fearless honesty about our own weaknesses and failures, into the daily experience of God through silence, Scripture, and prayer, and into a new life of love and service in the broken world around us.

This book has been very compelling for me. I would say it was thought provoking but what it has provoked was something much deeper that the level of thought. I will return to this book many times to be reminded of its deep spiritual message.
