Historia
Anna Fox lives alone - a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times...and spying on her neighbors. Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, mother, their teenaged son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn't, her world begins to crumble. And its shocking secrets are laid bare.

Builds and twists!
Revisado: 12-07-21
I love the care that the author took in depicting the characters and really building a sense of relationship with them! There were so many unexpected happenings that even though the book was long, I stayed engaged!

Historia
Why is it that so many efforts by liberals to lift the Black underclass not only fail, but often harm the intended beneficiaries? In Please Stop Helping Us, Jason L. Riley examines how well-intentioned welfare programs are in fact holding Black Americans back. Minimum-wage laws may lift earnings for people who are already employed, but they price a disproportionate number of Blacks out of the labor force. Affirmative action in higher education is intended to address past discrimination, but the result is fewer Black college graduates than would otherwise exist.

I loved the antiquated English. So beautiful. The story suspenseful and carefully fleshed out. Depicts the strength of Esther and her impact on everyone around her.

Historia
Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."

IMPACTING
Revisado: 09-13-17
Where does The Glass Castle rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
In my top 2
What other book might you compare The Glass Castle to and why?
none. I had never read such a story.
What about Jeannette Walls’s performance did you like?
her voice matched the situation.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I would have if I could! it was mesmerizing. sometimes too painful though....
Any additional comments?
I loved how her story showed the beauty of family even ones somewhat broken. And I loved how the children were able to overcome such obstacles and especially how though their parents had issues the children were a beautiful version of them. As parents, that's what we want for our children. To be better versions....not to say cookie cutter copies of us but to have some of us mixed in and to become better and soar higher. It helped me appreciate my parents and to look forward to seeing what components of me I will later see in my adult children.
