Historia
In an expensive London restaurant, Julia Lovat receives a gift that will change her life. It appears to be a book of exquisite 17th-century embroidery patterns - but on closer examination, Julia finds it also contains faint diary entries. In these, Cat Tregenna, an embroideress, tells how she and others were stolen out of a Cornish church in 1625 by Muslim pirates and taken on a brutal voyage to Morocco to be auctioned off as slaves.

Hang in there until the end!
Revisado: 09-19-24
Ok, there was definitely a moment when I thought this book was total bullsh*t and I nearly stopped reading. There was some moments that are a little off the mark, but it's one of those books that brings it all home in the end. It left me with revelations, questions to explore, lessons to incorporate into life. This is a good post-covid read, now that we're a few years out, to continue our collective processing of the pandemic and all that it entailed. I will caution that this may cause some people to relive some very difficult moments of the pandemic. All in all, I'm so glad I stuck with it as it was in the end an enjoyable read once you are presented with the whole picture.

Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

First, Daisy Ridley is a treasure. Her performance really makes you love the characters. The story is fun and entertaining with some emotional moments that don't drag you under but do make you stop and reflect. Jojo Moyes is a fantastic fiction writer that makes you love the story so much that you feel sad when you finish the book! I miss these ladies I've had in my life for weeks now!

Not great, not bad.
Revisado: 12-14-22
Two of the three narrators were wonderful, but the third most prevalent performer I found to be grating. She narrated like she was at a poetry jam session. The story itself was engaging enough, but as far as historical fiction goes, this was much heavier on the fiction. I found that it lost a little bit of the historical basis the author claims to be portraying in favor of salacious character narratives. Some depictions were hard to believe, but to avoid spoilers, I won't go into detail!

Historia
Polly, Annie, Elizabeth, Catherine, and Mary-Jane are famous for the same thing, though they never met. What they had in common was the year of their murders: 1888. The person responsible was never identified, but the character created by the press to fill that gap has become far more famous than any of these five women. For more than a century, newspapers have been keen to tell us that "the Ripper" preyed on prostitutes. Not only is this untrue, as historian Hallie Rubenhold has discovered, but it has prevented the real stories of these fascinating women from being told.
