Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: You thought he was a stodgy scientist with funny hair, but Isaacson and Hermann reveal an eloquent, intense, and selfless human being who not only shaped science with his theories, but politics and world events in the 20th century as well. Based on the newly released personal letters of Albert Einstein, Walter Isaacson explores how an imaginative, impertinent patent clerk became the mind reader of the creator of the cosmos.

a history of science
Revisado: 06-28-07
I suspect that if this biography were to be published using standard scientific conventions, the author list would be long indeed. This is not to diminish the achievement of the primary author, but given the immense breadth of scientific topics, there were many contributors to the clarity of the content. This is not so much a biography as a history of science at the turn of the 20th century. Everything from optics to fluid dynamics, wave theory, relativity, quantum mechanics, early atomic theory, fission, and the expanding universe are touched on - and so much more. Adding to the mix are insights into antisemitism, European politics, scientific hierarchy, socialism, communism, the atomic bomb, and the world wars. Yes, there are insights into Einstein the man, including his various romantic entanglements, but the biography truly shines in its extraordinary ability to cogently coelesce myriad scientific topics. This book is a treasure for those who love the history of science, and can appreciate the contributions of the many expert consultants.

Historia
The Civil War: A Narrative, Volume 1 begins one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned. All the great battles are here, of course, from Bull Run through Shiloh, the Seven Days Battles, and Antietam, but so are the smaller ones: Ball's Bluff, Fort Donelson, Pea Ridge, Island Ten, New Orleans, and Monitor versus Merrimac.

Timeless narrative of military strategy
Revisado: 01-28-06
This is not so much a book as a narrative military experience. And this will require more of you than a simple listen. Given the total 3 volume set will require around 150 hours of listening, the commitment required is readily apparent. However, unless you are a geography savant, I would also suggest purchase of the text for map reference. This is in essence a story of military strategy, so the physical geography plays a central role in the narrative. Civil war battle map books are separately available and are well worth the additional investment for visual reference. The book's extraordinary strength - its rendering of the generals - is also its weakness. Despite the length of the text, the detail lavished on understanding the foibles, motivations, and physical nature of the generals leaves little space for the greater context of the war. Indeed, the international and national political forces, including the institution of slavery, are generally referred to only in terms of their impact on the military plan. The day to day lives and motivations of the soldiers, too, are primarily viewed from the perspectives of the military leaders. That said, there are many other civil war texts that discuss the political context of the war. This is the tale of the battles themselves. With vivid details, each general comes to life, and each battlefield hill and valley seem palpable. If you want to understand the war from the point of view of Grant, Lee, and others, I can imagine no better resource.

Princeton. Good Friday, 1999. On the eve of graduation, two students are a hairsbreadth from solving the mysteries of the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili. Famous for its hypnotic power over those who study it, the 500-year-old Hypnerotomachia may finally reveal its secrets to Tom Sullivan, whose father was obsessed with the book, and Paul Harris, whose future depends on it. As the deadline looms, research has stalled, until an ancient diary surfaces.

Pompous and plotless
Revisado: 01-04-05
I was disappointed by this title, though I admit that it makes good trashy-novel-on-vacation reading. The authors flaunt their erudition at a pedantic adolescent "see what I know" level. The plot focuses far too much on perceptions of glamour and privilege at an ivy league university, and the criminal plot turns are entirely unbelievable. It is fun if you are in search of light reading with a puzzle plot, but you will need to tolerate the self-conscious writing.
