Historia
It is three in the morning when Bobby Western plunges from the Coast Guard tender into darkness. His dive light illuminates the sunken jet, nine bodies still buckled in their seats, hair floating, eyes devoid of speculation. Missing from the site are the pilot’s bag, the plane’s black box, and the tenth passenger. A collateral witness to machinations that can only bring him harm, Western is shadowed in body and spirit—by men with badges; by the ghost of his father, inventor of the bomb that melted glass and flesh in Hiroshima; and by his sister, the love and ruin of his soul.

Plot Went Nowhere
Revisado: 01-25-23
Listened for a family book club and we were all disappointed. It was like the author had a list of random things he wanted to write about, and was checking off his bucket list. The suspenseful plot at the beginning literally was never resolved. The hallucinations were never linked to anything. I would have given up if it weren't for the book club.

Historia
Gabourey Sidibe - "Gabby" to her legion of fans - skyrocketed to international fame in 2009 when she played the leading role in Lee Daniels' acclaimed movie Precious. In This Is Just My Face, she shares a one-of-a-kind life story in a voice as fresh and challenging as many of the unique characters she's played onscreen. With full-throttle honesty, Sidibe paints her Bed-Stuy/Harlem family life with a polygamous father and a gifted mother who supports her two children by singing in the subway.

Best Listen of the Year!
Revisado: 07-22-19
I love everything about Gabourey's autobiography, but especially her narration. She is genuine, with a sarcastic, dry wit that manages to be funny while conveying uncomfortable truths. She challenges my preconceptions and helps me to love myself and those around me.
I'm not into celebrities, in general. I have seen "Precious," and was blown away, but not any of Gabourey's other film or TV works. I'm now a huge fan of Gabourey the author and narrator and I will absolutely listen to Gabourey again and again. I listen to about 100 audio books a year, and this is definitely at the too for 2019!

Historia
The Man Who Moiled for Gold draws its title from the Robert W. Service poem: "The Cremation of Sam McGee". The poem tells of suffering, loneliness, frustration, and ultimately death. Charley Martin experienced all of these emotions along with love and success while becoming the man who moiled for gold. Charley Martin, in 1912, is found mining the hard rock of Butte, Montana. Years of breathing the fine quartz dust in the pits have given Charley silicosis. Discovery of this incurable condition, by the mine super, brought an abrupt change to the 69-year old miner's life.

A Historical Fiction Gem
Revisado: 05-22-18
I loved this book! It reminded me of News of the World. The author has the perfect voice for telling the old miner's story. The recording isn't perfect, but that added to the realism of the account. I would have given the book 5 stars, if not for a few editing issues. Charlie Martin is alive in my heart today. A well researched and historically accurate backdrop makes Charlie's story the story of hundreds of visionary and brave men who sought gold in the mountains of Colorado and Montana. The author brings the human side of Charlie to life through his relationships with his cousin, Joe, his beloved Claire, daughter Katie and the hard men who make mining a dangerous occupation. I cried, laughed and thought about the story long after I finished listening.

But instead of a joyous homecoming, she is greeted on the docks with unfortunate news: Her father has fallen ill, and a hospital visit will have to wait while he rests. I found this latest chapter of Flavia's life to be confusing and much too sad. I miss the joyful Flavia of the first few books.

Hooked Me
Revisado: 09-18-16
Great narration of a fascinating character. I felt a little voyeuristic, listening to this heartbreaking account of the abuse and neglect suffered by two young girls, at the hands of their meth addicted mother and hidden in the woods for years. The voice of the main character reminds me of The Secret Life of Bees in it's descriptive power and creativity. The story is ultimately one of horror, profound love and the resilience of the human spirit. However, having worked in a domestic violence shelter, I felt the author did a disservice to victims of abuse in how quickly they "recovered" and adapted to a totally alien world.
