Historia
In her phenomenally popular essays and long-running Tumblr blog, Roxane Gay has written with intimacy and sensitivity about food and body, using her own emotional and psychological struggles as a means of exploring our shared anxieties over pleasure, consumption, appearance, and health. As a woman who describes her own body as "wildly undisciplined", Roxane understands the tension between desire and denial, between self-comfort and self-care.

brave woman
Revisado: 03-04-19
This is not a review, as there are plenty of well written ones already - It‘s just a comment:
The day after I finished this, I listened to Gay‘s „update“, the essay_What Fullness Is - On getting weight reduction surgery_ published about a year after the book via the Medium Platform, where the author also discussed the topic further with the hosts. I admire Gay‘s intellect immensly, and agree that shaming isn‘t the best way to deal with our fat phobia. I dare anyone to read or listen to this brave author’s story and not look with more gentle eyes at the next fat person they meet. Personally, I learnt already at Weight Watchers(!) class a good 15 years ago that for some of the XL participants it’s a struggle just to venture out into this unsympathetic society and have ever since tried to be empathetic instead of judgemental. I only wish that the same good will would also be granted towards my own thighs! That indoctrination will take longer to free myself of, I‘m afraid ...

Historia
Mom loved adages, quotes, slogans. There were always little reminders pasted on the kitchen wall. For example, the word THINK. I found THINK thumbtacked on a bulletin board in her darkroom. I saw it Scotch-taped on a pencil box she’d collaged. I even found a pamphlet titled THINK on her bedside table. Mom liked to THINK.

not the best audio production
Revisado: 11-27-12
Where does Then Again rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
hard to say. I'm wondering whether the skipping back and forth between the mother's diary entries, letters and notes as well as letters and notes from former lovers and friends - not to mention from Keaton herself - and Keaton's present account, was made harder to follow without any layout hints. maybe different background sounds or something could have been added to help the listener?... or maybe it was just that some bits just weren't all that captivating?
What about Diane Keaton’s performance did you like?
very honest and touching
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
no

Historia
A wryly funny and moving account of an extraordinary life lived almost entirely in the public eye.
Teen idol at 15, international icon and founder of the Brat Pack at 20, and one of Hollywood's top stars to this day, Rob Lowe chronicles his experiences as a painfully misunderstood child actor in Ohio uprooted to the wild counterculture of mid-1970s Malibu, where he embarked on his unrelenting pursuit of a career in Hollywood.

self-deprecatingly funny
Revisado: 10-11-12
If you could sum up Stories I Only Tell My Friends in three words, what would they be?
well, I can only agree with NY Times' review that "Throughout this book Mr. Lowe emerges as a canny observer of both himself and others, and as someone whose instincts have grown increasingly sharp over time."
What other book might you compare Stories I Only Tell My Friends to and why?
probably a ton of other biographies, which the Time Magazine reviewer did, with this one coming out on top.
Which character – as performed by Rob Lowe – was your favorite?
Lowe's reading his own stories, of course brought perfect intonation - which is something that's really crucial to my being more captivated than irritated when listening - but his mastery of accents & impersonations was a much appreciated bonus. just to pick one, his Bill Clinton was spot on!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
several, the narrative had me giggling as well as tearing up more than once, and without giving anything away I was very impressed with how Lowe portrayed his mother & his relationship with her.
Any additional comments?
for this admitted movie & TV-series buff, the fascinating descriptions of his work experiences prompted me to (re)discover Lowe's performances in "the Outsiders", "St. Elmo's Fire" & "About Last Night" (one of the most watched flicks in my VHS-library 8) as well as the pilot of "the West Wing", which all still held up to me - at least accompanied with this read ...
