Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

Historia
In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Rich in detail and adventure!
Revisado: 10-07-20
A Gentleman in Moscow was a fun book to listen to. For some, the details might seem tedious, but the richness with unexpected twists, information of history and gentility gave true flavor and believability. Both the twists and expected events created an air of adventure, all within the confines of the hotel.
The journey of this book is and example of personal love lost, love found, patience and adaption of living life fully with intention and purpose. The Count was living with the circumstances cast upon him as consequences for his actions.
The narration was rich and believable. I’ll miss the characters and the narrators
Definitely recommend this audible.

Historia
This audiobook attempts to spark public discussion by revealing the tainted origins of modern policing as a tool of social control. It shows how the expansion of police authority is inconsistent with community empowerment, social justice - even public safety. Drawing on groundbreaking research from across the world, and covering virtually every area in the increasingly broad range of police work, Alex Vitale demonstrates how law enforcement has come to exacerbate the very problems it is supposed to solve.

Eye opening & worth the read (or listen)
Revisado: 07-14-20
this book is eye opening- I work in the world of serving the underserved and the disenfranchised and I learned so much-
It’s about leading and teaching with education and care, and understanding and kindness by people trained for this, not by fear, force and control.
Basically it says that
It would be better to improve the social services for those in need, to provide quality care with results of improved wellbeing... helping people be better, healthier and to then allow them to contribute and give back ( the last is my sentiment).
Policing can be for safety but social services, education and basic support is “a horse of a different color “.

Historia
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

Dejá by! Or Learning from our past
Revisado: 07-03-20
Robyn says: A timely read with facts and explanation of the facts in an way that makes it understandable. We could hardly put it down! The truth and terror are both inspiring to learn, and practice physical distancing and the three ‘C’’s of Cover your face, Clean your hands and Change your clothes. This was important to follow a century ago and important for today.
Awesome read! And listen!
Steve says: Published in 2006, it is amazingly informative about todays Covid19 pandemic. This is not just about the ravages of Influenza in 1918. It starts with a summary of the progress, or lack thereof, of the medical profession against disease. Cultural and religious barriers prevented progress from being made for several thousand years. Then in the 1800’s a few innovative people started to make progress by observing, measuring and experimenting. Significant progress started to be made against Cholera, Typhoid and a few others. The understanding of the role of bacteria and viruses was just coming into view. In 1917, a virus that started in Kansas propagated around the world --- where the political environment and troop movements of World War I provided the perfect global petri dish. Only a handful of leading medical scientists had the training to understand what was happening. This is the story of their epic struggle to understand and moderate the scourge that killed an estimated 50m people worldwide. It is well written and riveting. As a backdrop, it details the development of the medical schools and centers of medical science that we now take for granted. This includes institutions like Johns Hopkins that was founded, in its day, to take medicine in a radical new direction. And it provides a primer on virology --- explaining why an RNA virus like influenza (and corona viruses) are always mutating to become more or less communicable and lethal. They are truly a moving target. Get ready for a wide-ranging history of medicine from blood letting to the development of vaccines, and an unvarnished view into the horrors of what happened in 1918.

Information is empowering and a worthwhile read
Revisado: 09-16-19
Information is empowering.
This is a worthwhile read for everyone, whether you have a family member, friend, medical professional or just interested.
As a Family Physician with a family member with progressing dementia, I found this book, informative, kind, gentle and blatantly honest. Presented with kindness, in words and phrases that are easy to understand but non-condescending or patronizing, the kindness and honesty are refreshing, practical and helpful.
Don't despair with how you feel or how your life is affected by this devastating illness that progresses, because you are not alone the support and understanding from the resources and information is encouraging and supportive.
A work of true skill to present this information in a way we can all accept, embrace and feel supported to advocate for ourselves and our loved one

Historia
Why are more American adolescent girls prey to depression, eating disorders, addictions, and suicide attempts than ever before? According to Dr. Mary Pipher, a clinical psychologist who has treated girls for more than twenty years, we live in a look-obsessed, media-saturated, "girl-poisoning" culture. Despite the advances of feminism, escalating levels of sexism and violence - from undervalued intelligence to sexual harassment in elementary school - cause girls to stifle their creative spirit and natural impulses, which, ultimately, destroys their self-esteem.
