Historia
Muriel is newly married and restless, transplanted from her rural Kansas hometown to life in a dusty bungalow in San Diego. The air is rich with the tang of salt and citrus, but the limits of her new life seem to be closing in: She misses her freethinking mother, dead before Muriel's 19th birthday, and her sly, itinerant brother-in-law, Julius, who made the world feel bigger than she had imagined. And so she begins slipping off to the Del Mar racetrack to bet and eavesdrop, learning the language of horses and risk.

Wanted to like it ...
Revisado: 07-24-20
Heard about this book on NPR and it sounded promising. However, I was disappointed. I wanted to care about the characters and enjoy clever turns of phrases but ultimately did not. I did not find this book interesting overall.

Historia
Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she's thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy. But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office.

Well Done
Revisado: 05-14-19
I love the structure of this story; it's different. The reasons for Eleanor's behavior and internal dialog are carefully and intentionally woven into the fabric of her everyday life so that when the reader reaches bottom with her the result is more of a gentle cradling and less of a splat. An interesting take on how one's childhood trauma is introduced to the adult self.

Historia
Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

Historia
A series of tragedies brings Vivvie's young grandchildren into her custody, and her two estranged daughters back under one roof. Jackson, Vivvie's husband, was shot and killed 30 years ago, and the ramifications have splintered the family into their own isolated remembrances and recriminations. This deeply personal, hauntingly melancholy look at the damages families inflict on each other - and the healing that only they can provide - is filled with flinty, flawed, and complex people stumbling towards some kind of peace.

So well done
Revisado: 02-29-16
On the surface the story line could be seen as cliché - but it is not - the subtle and not so subtle twists and turns kept my attention and interest. Towards the end i listened to it sparingly - not quite ready to leave the story behind. The end is a lovely transition. I look forward to listening to more from this author and performer.

Transported to Another Time
Revisado: 12-19-11
At first I wasn't too keen on this book but was listening to it as part of a book club. However, as time went on the book offered a unique view into a very important creative era in which the players were active participants in that creation. Final estimation; worth it.

This book changed my view of the Islamic faith
Revisado: 10-15-11
Before listening to this book I thought, as many people do, that the Islamic faith is at it's core, a faith of peace and love and that it is the "fringe" elements causing all the trouble. But the author makes it clear that it is not; it is about oppression, separatism, intolerance, and blind adherence to a strict and violent faith. She comes to these conclusions through her upbringing in the faith and her study of the Qur'an. It is a sobering read.
