The story is very original and the characters are all very interesting. The story got a bit meandering at times, but overall, a great book;

Lovely, heartwarming story.

This story reminds you that even when you don’t feel like a hero or the best at anything, that doesn’t mean the people around you don’t think you’re the absolute, freaking most brilliant person in the room. Loved it.

Historia
Eve Hatch lives for surprises! Just kidding. She expects every tomorrow to be pretty much the same as today. She loves her cozy apartment in Brooklyn that’s close to her childhood best friend Willa, and far from her midwestern, traditional family who has never really understood her. While her job is only dream-adjacent, it’s comfortable and steady. She always knows what to expect from her life . . . until she finds herself expecting after an uncharacteristic one-night stand.

Story was boring, characters also boring, the food descriptions were the best part. The narration was fine but the story was so slow moving with very little excitement. I honestly fell asleep listening to it in the middle of the day while waiting for my instant pot to release.

Historia
Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes, she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together. But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema's golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: Due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in.

Phillipa Soo is brilliant, relatable, funny and story is charming!
Revisado: 07-20-21
I’ve spent credits on books I enjoyed far less. This was my favorite listen of the summer. Phillipa Soo is my favorite narrator from now on, putting all others to shame with her beguiling accents and relatable storytelling. I laughed out loud many times. As for the book itself, this is the first Lily Chu book I’ve read and I enjoyed its it was easy and the characters are like able if a little predictable. She does a good job of destigmatizing depression and treatment. She touches briefly on some typical issues faced by AAPI folks but it’s not a strong theme. Overall, a great fun read, but the narration is what really makes it outstanding.

Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

Zero levity
Revisado: 07-10-21
I like for there to be at least some small triumphs for the protagonists in the story. There were not. I found it very desolate and dark and while historically I understand it was a desperate time for our nation, I personally needed a the characters to have a few more wins.

Historia
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

Wonderful Story
Revisado: 08-12-20
I love it when an author reads their own work because there’s a tangible authenticity that comes through. This story grabbed me from the beginning, not a page turner in the classic sense, but because I was utterly charmed by the characters. You can’t help but root for Sam and his band of misfits the entire story.
