Antietam? Not really - more like a summary of 1862.
Revisado: 12-18-23
Somewhat repetitious. The weather was bad, they marched hard and were tired, etc. Not particularly believable in terms of interactions between junior and senior soldiers/leaders. Only the last chapter or two has anything to do with Antietam.

The First of a New Genre
Revisado: 08-06-19
This isn't the type of book I'd normally read; however, I was curious about what the reference to "new genre" was all about. Very happy with purchase. Capote brings insight and depth to a story which, today, would be tabloid journalism. The fact that the Sherriff's wife lived with and fed a murderer brings humanity to the recount of this horrible crime.
The narrator did a good job bringing those involved to life without sensationalizing them. It surprised me how compelling I found this book. Would definitely recommend.

Historia
The Civil War: A Narrative, Vol. 2 continues one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned. Focusing on the pivotal year of 1863, the second volume in Shelby Foote's masterful narrative history brings to life some of the most dramatic and important moments in the Civil War, including the Battle of Gettysburg and Grant's Vicksburg Campaign. The word narrative is the key to this book's extraordinary incandescence and truth: The story is told entirely from the point of view of the people involved.

Extremely Comprehensive Civil War Narrative
Revisado: 08-06-19
Our family is very interest in the Civil War. We've actually purchased the physical version of this book twice because it is so frequently read in our home. If you are looking for details and a thorough history book, you cannot do better than Shelby Foote's three-part narrative. However, the narrator does not do this book justice. It feels dry and tedious read by Grover Gardner. I enjoy some of Grover Gardner's other narrations, but this one isn't my favorite.
Completely unrelated, but discovered through reading this series. My paternal great-great-grandfather was shot/wounded at Opequen Creek within about a mile of where my maternal great-great-grandfather lived. This book brings history to life.

Historia
The crown of England is the oldest surviving political institution in Europe. Throughout this audiobook Dr David Starkey emphasises the Crown's endless capacity to adapt to circumstances and reshape national policy, whilst he unmasks the personalities and achievements, the defeats and victories, which lie behind the kings and queens of British history. Each of these monarchs has contributed to the religion, geography, laws, language, and government which we live with today.

The book that got us hooked on Audible!!
Revisado: 08-06-19
We found this book based on a TV series. The narration is great. The pacing is great. Our family learned a lot listening to this book and I wish Dr. Starkey's other Monarchy book were available on Audible. This book doesn't contain a lot of bias and it also doesn't get too deep in the weeds for someone who enjoys history but will never be a history major. Highly recommend!!
