Historia
In Jesmyn Ward's first novel since her National Book Award-winning Salvage the Bones, this singular American writer brings the archetypal road novel into rural 21st-century America. An intimate portrait of a family and an epic tale of hope and struggle, Sing, Unburied, Sing journeys through Mississippi's past and present, examining the ugly truths at the heart of the American story and the power - and limitations - of family bonds.

Disliked narration. Mostly Leonie. Her voice and timber went up and down and emphasized according to her breathing style and not the narrative. It would have been better to actually read the book but I don’t see well enough.

Historia
London’s Slough House is where the washed-up MI5 spies go to while away what’s left of their careers. The “Slow Horses,” as they’re called, have all disgraced themselves in some way to get relegated here. Maybe they messed up an op badly, or got in the way of an ambitious colleague. Maybe they just got too dependent on the bottle—not unusual in this line of work. One thing these failed spies have in common, though, is they all want to be back in the action. Now the Slow Horses have a chance at redemption.

The narrative was confusing during the second half. Too many separate incidents were happening at the same time and the narrator didn’t distinguish between the actions. River’s situation was not differentiated from Lambs or the others. There should have been some way to separate them.

Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own.

Narrator guilty of “over acting” as they say in the movies. Irritating from the beginning. Plots are simplistic, but then it is supposed to be cozy. I’m not sorry I read it.

I didn’t like the change in narrator. Gabriel’s voice was disconcerting and several other characters voices grated. The main narrator’s voice was fine. I won’t continue with the series. The history was terrific.

Historia
Ariel Price wakes up in Lisbon, alone. Her husband is gone—no warning, no note, not answering his phone. Something is wrong. She starts with hotel security, then the police, then the American embassy, at each confronting questions she can’t fully answer: What exactly is John doing in Lisbon? Why would he drag her along on his business trip? Who would want to harm him? And why does Ariel know so little about her new—much younger—husband?

The plot was fine but the characters were hard to follow. The changes in locations, circumstances and characters were confusing. The narrator did not vary her voice enough to alert the reader to any changes occurring so the reader is left wondering who is talking and where they are in time or location.
