Great Book, Terrible Narration
Revisado: 10-14-21
Fascinating book that I recommend to anyone interested in the subject matter, but even though William J. Birnes was involved in writing the book, he should never have been the person to narrate it. In particular, the way he reads conversations between two or more individuals is like listening to an excitable comic book conversation between Archie and Jughead, which makes those conversations appear almost silly. I highly recommend the book, but unless you can find a version read by a more accomplished narrator, it would be better to read this book rather than listen to it.

Historia
The New York Times best-selling memoir that inspired the film October Sky, Rocket Boys is a uniquely American memoir - a powerful, luminous story of coming of age at the dawn of the 1960s, of a mother's love and a father's fears, of a group of young men who dreamed of launching rockets into outer space... and who made those dreams come true. Nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award, Homer Hickam's lush, lyrical memoir is a marvelously entertaining chronicle of triumph.

Outstanding!
Revisado: 10-06-21
After watching the film, "October Sky" several times over the years, and loving it each time, I decided to finally read (listen) to the book the film was based on. I was thoroughly entertained by this book, and very impressed by the writing, and pleasantly surprised that Homer Hickam was not only an accomplished engineer, but also a very accomplished writer as well. The narrator, Tom Stechschulte was also excellent. I highly recommend this book to everyone!

Beth Cardall has a secret. For 18 years, she has had no choice but to keep it to herself, but on Christmas Eve 2008, all that is about to change. For Beth, 1989 was a year marked by tragedy. Then, on Christmas Day, as she rushed through a blizzard to the nearest 7-Eleven, Beth encountered Matthew, a strikingly handsome, mysterious stranger, who would single-handedly change the course of her life.

Loved This Book!
Revisado: 02-19-21
Since first discovering the books of Richard Paul Evans three months ago, I have now listened to thirty of his books and have loved all but one. This book offers the same sweet messages as so many of his books do, and that is why I loved this one also. Some people simply do not care for any hint of a Sci Fi or Futuristic theme in stories, which of course is simply a matter of personal taste. But even though I could foresee where this story was going fairly early on, it was still a warm and wonderful story with a good message, and that is what I look for in Evans' writings. I was not disappointed in the least.

Historia
Colin Calloway uses the prism of George Washington's life to bring focus to the great Native leaders of his time and the tribes they represented: the Iroquois Confederacy, Lenape, Miami, Creek, Delaware; in the process, he returns them to their rightful place in the story of America's founding. The Indian World of George Washington spans decades of Native American leaders' interactions with Washington, from his early days as surveyor of Indian lands to his military career against both the French and the British to his presidency.

Don't Bother
Revisado: 12-25-20
Calloway is no friend to George Washington. Often his use of negative words and tone describing Washington's actions and behavior make that obvious. The same can be said of the narrator, Heitsch. He seemed to take particular pleasure when using negative words to describe the Father of our Nation. Don't waste your time with this book. The author is clearly biased.

Historia
No nation can be greater than the strength of its individual homes or the virtue of its people. Sadly, many today would say ours is a nation in crisis. Families are splintering around us, our children are becoming alienated from their great cultural heritage, and our leaders seem increasingly out of touch. Yet, according to Gordon B. Hinckley, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, one cannot lose hope.

Herein Lies Wisdom
Revisado: 02-08-19
In our divided world it is refreshing to read or listen to wisdom such as the words contained in this book. There is no preaching, but only teaching by reminding us of the great wisdom of living by the principles of true Judeo/Christianity. Its message is nondenominational, inspiring and very relevant for today’s world.

Finding and identifying a pirate ship is the hardest thing to do under the sea. But two men—John Chatterton and John Mattera—are willing to risk everything to find the Golden Fleece, the ship of the infamous pirate Joseph Bannister. At large during the Golden Age of Piracy in the seventeenth century, Bannister should have been immortalized in the lore of the sea—his exploits more notorious than Blackbeard’s, more daring than Kidd’s. But his story, and his ship, have been lost to time.

The frontiersmen were a remarkable breed of men. They were often rough and illiterate, sometimes brutal and vicious, often seeking an escape in the wilderness of mid-America from crimes committed back east. In the beautiful but deadly country which would one day come to be known as West Virginia, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, more often than not they left their bones to bleach beside forest paths or on the banks of the Ohio River.

Incredible Book!
Revisado: 03-23-12
This book is one of the best books I have ever read or in this case listened to. It reads like a novel and is fascinating from beginning to end. I recommend it to anyone with any interest at all in American History. Now I'd like to take a trip to that part of the country where all of these events occurred. It was so interesting to learn about such great American characters, both American and American Indian alike. Before this book I'd never heard of Simon Kenton. Now I believe he deserves all the veneration that can be heaped upon him. Amazing story! Allan W. Eckert is a terrific writer and story teller.

Before cell phones that fit in the palm of your hand and slim laptops that fit snugly into briefcases, computers were like strange, alien vending machines. They had cryptic switches, punch cards, and pages of encoded output. But in 1975, a young engineering wizard named Steve Wozniak had an idea: What if you combined computer circuitry with a regular typewriter keyboard and a video screen?

Great Book!
Revisado: 02-09-12
I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end. It's an amazing story about an amazing man who changed the world, and Listening to Patrick Lawlor narrate the book was like listening to "Woz" himself.
I was so impressed by this book that I've recommended it to several others including my own adult children, who I've suggested they read the book to their own children. Steve offers some outstanding advice to young people at the end, advice that I wish had been offered to me when I was young.
One thing I really appreciated is the way Steve kept his explanations simple for the most part so that those of us who do not understand much about electronics don't get bogged down in highly technical explanations of what he was doing. I have found that quite often people who are really good in some subjects such as math and science are good because these things often come easily to them, so they don't understand why the rest of us don't understand as easily as they do. Steve knows how to explain things simply, and I thank him for that. What a great teacher he must be and those who have had the opportunity to be taught by him personally are fortunate indeed.
I highly recommend this book to young and old alike, and if you ever have the opportunity to meet this great man you should jump at the chance. He is great not only for the amazing things he has accomplished, but also for being a terrific human being, which you will recognize when you understand his philosophy about life.
