Historia
1952. Twelve years have passed since Churchill lost to the appeasers and Britain surrendered to Nazi Germany. The global economy strains against the weight of the long German war against Russia still raging in the east. The British people find themselves under increasingly authoritarian rule - the press, radio, and television tightly controlled, the British Jews facing ever greater constraints.

Suspenseful!!
Revisado: 05-25-24
Exciting perspective on “what might have happened” if Britain had not stood firm against the Nazis. Paints a frightening picture of how easily the country could have slid into authoritarian rule. Sometimes had echoes of “1984”. I loved it!!!

Tremendously Exciting
Revisado: 03-01-24
Totally loved this vivid and exciting book. The book was written more than 100 years so be warned about some offensive racial language. That said, it was adventurous and very fast paced. Espionage, spies, war, and a very different life than 21st century.

Fun listen.
Revisado: 11-09-23
The story was exciting. Kept me going during workouts. Didn't like narrator very much. Narrator sounded a bit pompous or condescending at times, or overly dramatic. But overall, definitely worth listening.

In In Order to Live, Yeonmi Park shines a light not just into the darkest corners of life in North Korea, describing the deprivation and deception she endured and which millions of North Korean people continue to endure to this day, but also onto her own most painful and difficult memories. She tells with bravery and dignity for the first time the story of how she and her mother were betrayed and sold into sexual slavery in China and forced to suffer terrible psychological and physical hardship before they finally made their way to Seoul, South Korea - and to freedom.

Inspiring memoir of triumph.
Revisado: 10-18-23
Mesmerizing story of family love inside the brutal regime of North Korea. The extreme hardship and danger involved in escape were almost overwhelming. The author not only survived but triumphed. Well written. Loved the narrator.

Historia
Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first Lo's stay is nothing but pleasant: The cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, and gray skies fall.

really loved this!!!
Revisado: 08-06-19
Loved it from the start, although I didn't know where it was going. Then the plot lines converged. The book was full of surprises. The narrator was 5 star fantastic!!! I only allowed myself to listen on the way home from work ( because I have my inspirational and instructive books for the "to work" trip). So it was great. I really looked forward to listening. Enjoy! PS: I learned a little history from it, too. And got prodded to go further.

subtly creepy
Revisado: 06-05-19
moves at a moderate pace and has a sort of claustrophobic effect, which I found very consistent with the character of the narrator. I liked it. It was almost a cautionary tale about a manipulative and self-absorbed boss.

Historia
Thomas McNulty, having fled the Great Famine in Ireland and now barely 17 years old, signs up for the US Army in the 1850s and with his brother in arms, John Cole, goes to fight in the Indian Wars - against the Sioux and the Yurok - and, ultimately, in the Civil War. Orphans of terrible hardships themselves, they find these days to be vivid and alive, despite the horrors they see and are complicit in. Moving from the plains of Wyoming to Tennessee, Sebastian Barry's latest work is a masterpiece of atmosphere and language.

Fabulous book. Great narrator. WOW!!!
Revisado: 12-06-18
The content of this book was amazing. It was like poetry. It is a bit risky to use that analogy, because it suggests something flowery and overblown. The book was neither. It was just awesome. I think the narrator enhanced the experience for me because the pacing was consistent. The story itself was so compelling that it would have been tempting to race on, and I think a lot of the beauty of the writing could have been missed. It was so good. Gloriously so. Some of the descriptions of the carnage of the Indian wars was very hard to listen to, not gratuitously violent but difficult. But the humanity of the characters and their full development was wonderful.
