As far as the negative reviews go.
Revisado: 03-16-25
I almost believed the inevitable reviews of the change of authors after the first three books. I am so glad I took a chance and kept going. Even after the first book, there was never going to be another one that could hit in the same way. But subsequent books introduced more and more of the main characters backstories and influences as well as making some of the nearly unbelievable talents explainable in very believable events. The 4th and 5th books took me over 5 years to get to as I unfortunately let the naysayers get to me. It was last week that I finally took a chance on book 4 and since it was pretty much impossible to put down, I have not only finished it but now have also finished book 5. As soon as I finish this review, I’m going to get book 6. So t believe the negative reviews; I was all too ready to be disappointed but it was the exact opposite.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Don’t debate it!
Revisado: 01-28-25
I kept wondering about this book right up to the last bit of the last couple pages of the last chapter. A few chapters before the end, I still wondered, as good and as un-put-down-able as the writing and the excellent narration had made it to that point. But it is all worth it. A tale of one of the both unluckiest and luckiest characters you’ll ever read about.

Interesting and entertaining.
Revisado: 01-01-25
This was an outlier in many ways. There are some very funny bits scattered throughout. I did not need to use a credit on it as it was part of Audible Plus library and really, I wouldn’t have gotten it otherwise. I think the writer and the performers deserve credit for all that went into it and I hope to see more from them as they show a lot of potential. Other than some time you don’t have much to lose so you should give it a try. You do need to be tuned into it and not listening while doing other things or you will get lost as it jumps a bit and the voices and sound effects take a bit to hold onto and make sense of.

Why did I wait so long?
Revisado: 12-29-24
I knew that I had been amazed by Ann Patchett’s writing several times and yet, something in the description of this book kept me on the (wrong side of)fence. I just finished it and as I remember from other of her novels, I am once again astounded at her virtuosity with a story! If, for some reason, you find yourself not sure whether to use a credit on this book, do yourself a favor, get this and find yourself, like me, unable to turn it off at anything like a reasonable amount of time spent in one day listening when you know you have other things calling, such as sleep even.

Everyone - even Augustus the cat - has cause to be obliged to Jeeves when he manages to retrieve the infamous Book, the book kept under lock and key at the Junior Ganymede Club and which lays bare the private lives of three-quarters of the upper classes - and which could prove to be political dynamite at the Market Snodsbury by-election! It once again falls to Bertie Wooster's manservant to save the day.

Who on earth…
Revisado: 12-20-24
…listened to Mr. Landen and thought "Oh my, yes, we must get him into the recording studio.?" This is the worst choice of narrators for poor Bertie and Jeeves that has popped up over the years! If, like me, you think you can stand it regardless, try slowing the speed to eighty percent for some improvement.
All this fuss about AI currently in vogue and yet no one has thought to take the great master’s books and let AI listen to one of the two best Wodehouse narrators that ever recorded the Wodehouse books and then use those voices and inflections on the two who did capture the spirit of all the characters who inhabit the delightful world PG created. Those two narrators were Jonathan Cecil and Alexander Spencer.
Well, after that digression, back to this recording, if you want to give it a go, I’d recommend you buy it with a credit even though the cash price is less than the cost of a credit as then, if you just can’t take it, you can return it and get the credit back.
One more thing, say you decide to get this title in book form, you should know that it was called- Much Obliged Jeeves -in England but was simultaneously published in the US as- The Ties That Bind -and it wasn’t only the title that changed; the ending of the book changed and was much the better ending! It was a small but dramatic change for the better as the change that will warm the heart of anyone who loves escaping into the world of Bertie and Jeeves.
Sorry for going on so long and as I am writing this in the wee hours and my proofreader has left for the day, I must also ask that you overlook any mistakes in spelling, grammar and such.

Just listened for second time.
Revisado: 12-16-24
I don’t know how many years it’s been since I first listened to to this book but decided I had to leave a review this time. I’m not going to go into a lot or actually, any kind of detail. I am just leaving this review for anyone who is reading the reviews but is still on the fence; what I really look for in a book is one that keeps riveted. If you want to listen to a story that you keeps you from turning it off even when you should be doing something else or getting some sleep, etc. than get this book. Warning though, there are several more books in the series and you’re going to want them all.

Best yet?
Revisado: 12-14-24
This story was much as you’d expect if you have been a fan of the series and, like myself and so many others, are ready for the next book as soon as you’ve finished the current one. Two things about this one really made it stand out; although they have all had a level of suspense to them, this one had that from early throughout the entitreity of the story right up until the end. And secondly, the ending, while not a cliffhanger, leaves you wanting to see where the larger story goes from here even more than usual.
As usual, the narrator does a fabulous job as well.

This personal, philosophical narrative surveys the panorama of our world past and present. Dillard poses questions of natural evil, God, and individual existence. Can one individual really matter? If so, how? Compassionate, enthralling, and always surprising, For the Time Being is the latest work by one of our most original writers - her breadth of knowledge matched by keenness of observation- at her best.

Do you have a favorite book?
Revisado: 08-14-24
It always seemed virtually impossible to answer when someone would ask- “Who is your favorite author?” or even more impossible- “What is your favorite book?” At least it seemed that way until some 20-25 years ago when I stumbled upon this book. Much as historical events that hit so deeply that you know and can even still feel where you were, what you were doing when the event happened. That is how I still remember when and where I was when I was lucky enough to hear of this book. I have read the physical book at least a dozen times since. The writing is inspiring and intoxicating and the reason(s) for re-reading are multi fold. There is the love of language and her incredible prose but there is also the affirmations that result when reading this book to put current problems, large and small, personal and universal into perspective as no other book I’ve ever read has done.
I should have taken more time to write this but I am still reveling in having just found out that this edition with this narrator was published. I had, years ago purchased the earlier version by a female narrator who was, among the 1200 Audiobooks in my library, the worst. I haven’t listened to enough of this edition to comment intelligently on his performance but the bit I have listened to is so much better than that earlier version ( yes, I realize it’s a low bar) that I, at this point, love his narration but that could just be that thankfully there is now a version I can listen to.
I no longer (at least currently have no copy of the physical book because, invariably I have given every copy I’ve bought over the years away to many people.) When I found out about this new edition, I asked a close friend if I had ever told him about this book and I had as it turned out. I am paraphrasing here but I believe he said, along these lines “You did and I’ve read it 3 or 4 times now. He also said that his wife had as well. If you are on the fence, please jump over and get this. It is a book that you will understand, once you have read it, why some reviews, both professional and personal, individual ones will work into their review that this book changed their life. How much more could you ask for.
One last; in another Annie Dillard book, she is talking about a period in her early life and reading in that period. Here is what she said- “A book of fiction was a bomb. It was a land mine you wanted to go off. You wanted it to blow your whole day. Unfortunately, hundreds of thousands of books were duds.”
This one is most definitely not a dud.

Stella is enjoying life as an almost student, or at least she is until a man falls from the sky right in front of her, leaving a big old hole in the pavement for Manchester Council to fill. The obvious question of how he ended up in the sky in the first place has no obvious answers, which is where The Stranger Times come in. This isn't just the hunt for another story though. Dark powers think Stella might have been involved and the only way she and the team can prove her innocence is to find out what the hell is really going on.

10 Hours and 36 Minutes In…
Revisado: 07-18-24
WOW! Normally wouldn’t think of writing a review with 4 hours and 37 minutes still to go but this book is so incredibly well done.
Caimh McDonnell has outdone himself which is saying a great deal indeed. Brendan McDonald as narrator does his usual bang up job on the lot and it certainly seems like he must be having fun doing them. It sure comes through that way.
The Stranger Times series has consistently been gaining traction strength with each addition but this book is, in my opinion, the best of them all.
I just got the book last night and am going to pay later today but hey, I’ll sleep when I’m dead (well looked after by Brian and his brethren). I just wish there were more than the 4 hours and 37 minutes I have left to finish. If you’ve not read/listened to any of the Stranger Times series, you really should start at the beginning and not start here. McDonnell has built the characters that populate the incredible Manchester as it is here like a master and you’d probably have a totally different opinion of this book if you jumped in here. For readers of the series; if you’re on the fence, jump off and get this story one. You will definitely not be sorry. And if you’re thinking,
"I’m not risking a credit on someone’s opinion who hasn’t even read the whole damn book", I promise I’ll come back and edit my review if suddenly the whole literary train of thought derails and plunges into a ditch.

I never review before finishing the book but…
Revisado: 09-29-23
I wondered about getting this installment in the series even though I so thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the series. But, based on the length coupled with the subject matter from the plot description, I wavered on using a credit. Don’t get me wrong, when writing is really well done, the longer the better as if it’s great, you don’t want it to end. I just didn’t see how that much time could be effectively filled inside the cultish compound and not start dragging. Well, I’ve now only got 10 hours left and I am already wishing it were even longer. What an amazing writer, never disappoints and gets better and better.
I could go into details about how the characters are so incredibly fleshed out and a kerjillion other small points that all add up to why you should get this but others will do that better than I would anyway. I honestly just want to tell anyone who might also have had doubts as to whether to get this chapter in the series- YES! Get it, and if you are lucky you’ll have more willpower than I do and will be able to listen at a slower pace than me. I expect to lose more sleep and finish tonight to then have to wait patiently for the next one which, with any luck, will be even longer.
Five Big Stars!
