High Praise for a complex web...
Revisado: 09-16-21
Song of Night continues in Cooper's EPIC style, which still reminds me of both Jordan and Sanderson. I can't tell you how excited I was to jump back into this world, and this book seriously expands the world! The writing and story are so cinematic, just like Circle of Reign. No screen required for this movie! Minor characters become much more important, and things seeded from Altar of Influence start to take center stage. I just can't say enough about the flow, the intensity, the high stakes... The characters feel apart of my life.
I lost a lot of sleep. The story would not let me go!! Even after I finished (the end is AWESOME) I'm still just thinking and thinking and thinking... BRAVO!

American retirees face a looming crisis. We are living longer than ever before, and most experts predict a dramatic rise in tax rates within the next 10 years. The hard truth is that no matter how much you save, you are likely to outlive your money or watch it be taxed into oblivion. But when traditional retirement distribution strategies won't provide sufficient income in the face of higher taxes, what can you do?

Insightful and Urgent
Revisado: 11-17-20
The book is honest about the financial condition we face as a nation. There’s no sugar coating that. It’s not a pleasant conversation but can’t be avoided. More important is how the prevailing financial situation of our country could dramatically impact our retirement hopes and dreams. It does seem qualified plans have a huge target on them that the government would love to take aim at. The strategies in this book appear sound in being able to do something to guard against those threats we all face: rising taxes, increasing longevity, negative legislation, and negative volatility during the income phase of retirement. Thoroughly enjoyed the discussion. I just wish we had a bit more time for the discussion on the solution side of the equation, but valuable nonetheless!

Historia
It's the 22nd century. Humanity has taken its first steps into the galaxy, and we've found ourselves in a vast playground of alien races and cultures. As the newest players on the universal stage, though, we're at the bottom of the food chain. Welcome back to the Four Horsemen universe, where only a willingness to fight and die for money separates humans from the majority of the other races. While some of the stories deal with mercenaries, others introduce listeners to the other guilds, organizations, and races that make up the landscape of the Four Horsemen universe.

Probably can’t say enough about the stories here. I mean, not every story is on the same level, and I appreciated some above others, but I have to say that I enjoyed them all. Narration was bloody brilliant. Took a chance on this because of Michaelson as the voice.
Favorites: butch and Sundance by Cawdron

Leverage, Josh Hayes.
Emancipation, Mark Wandrey
Forbidden Science, Terry Mixon
Family Tradition, Ian Malone
Messenger, Nick Cole
Tinkerman, Jake Bible
That being said, each story really had great entertainment value. A lot of these collections are hit and miss, but this was time well spent. Will listen to several again.

Engaging set up and story
Revisado: 01-12-18
Story was engaging. Things moved pretty fast in the beginning and then slowed down, setting things up for what I am guessing will be future books. Some of the history was interesting but long, but the narrator was really strong. He made those sections interesting with great performance. Good and consistent voicing. I don't know how someone keeps all those character voices straight.
How the "end" came up was really interesting and well thought out. I'd recommend this book as a solid dystopian drama with well-developed characters. The story opens up with a good promise of more intense action in future books. Fun escape.

ONE FOR THE AGES
Revisado: 01-03-18
Like Sanderson, Sullivan, and a milder GRRM? Circle of Reign knocks it out of the park. After listening to the prelude, Altar of influence, and then this, I see the series becoming one that lasts the test of time.
This is what fantasy is supposed to be in my mind. I love being dropped into the middle of a story and having to figure things out. The author does a masterful job of creating a mysterious history that I love seeing unfold. You can feel the beckoning of ancient secrets, and Michael Kramer's performance is beyond stellar.
Reign and Hedron are well crafted characters that give this epic fantasy a strong coming of age flavor. They have a great bond and are brought closer through tragedy. I definitely cheer for them, but they don't always win. Aiden, the bodyguard kinda guy, drips with sarcasm but genuine loyalty. The magic system is quite unique and not heavy-handed. But the emotion the book conjures in the end...wow, what a payoff. I will relisten to this adventure many times.

Bring me home...
Revisado: 07-15-17
First, I have listened to the author's book "Endeavour" and thoroughly enjoyed it. That one was also narrated by the talented Michael Kramer. This book is wildly different and show's Kern's ability to write in a different genre altogether,...although there is a bit of sci-fi flare here, it is light. The premise--meeting of a cruise ship and a destroyer, relying on each other to survive--is awesome. Can you imagine the possibilities? The conflict between crews? The completely different missions and priorities? The stage is rife with genuine conflict opportunities and Kern does not disappoint.
Although I didn't really consider this taking a chance on a book, since I already liked one other of Kern's, it was still a new genre for him. But thoroughly enjoyed it. Was hard to pull the ear buds out.

I tried. I mean, I really tried. See the rest of my reviews and you'll see I love fantasy. I love this book, having read the kindle...but the audio version...ugh. The narrator killed it for me. I'm not sure what he sounded like or what he reminded me of, but his voice does not fit the material. Truly bummed because I have looked forward to these books coming to audio for a while. Would loved to have heard a Michael Kramer (Mistborn/Wheel of Time/Circle of Reign), Nick Podhel (Name of the Wind/Castes and the outCastes), Scott Brick (The Passage/Terra Incognita), Oliver Wyman (Crucible of Souls), or a Keith Michaelson (The Lost Shards) type of narrator. I'm not a mean spirited person, I promise! I just have to encourage you to skip the audio on this one and read the actual book.

Revelations. Fast paced. Deepening.
Revisado: 06-23-17
This short but action packed entry into the Nomad series is a welcome addition. The sneak peek of Cronus at the end is enough to tie this seeming one-off into the main series. Michaelson is stellar for this material. Captures the seriousness, sarcasm, fear...every emotion.
Finn continues to impress.

Worthy Collection!
Revisado: 01-20-17
Normally not a sci-fi guy, but here and there I delve into it. I found this book because of Jacob Cooper. I love his fantasy books. Then, I saw several other big names. I loved Stephen Moss's fear saga. Richard Fox is well known for his military sci-fi, though I've never read one of his books. Ralph Kern appears to have some clout in the genre as well. I hadn't heard of the others, but I've found a new TBR/TBL list thanks to this anthology.
All the stories herein are unique. Ralph Kern opens the book and sets the stage with The Challenge. It was exceptionally well done, and I think the narration did a lot to convince me to keep with this. I'll review that separately, but the characters were genuine to me and I appreciate the voice talent. PP Corcoran's story was perhaps the most unique as it doesn't feature a wormhole, but it still a great short that showcases some skill. I won't go through each of them, but I will say my favorites were PJ Strebor's Flawed Perspective, Charlie Pulsipher's Webbed Prisms, Jacob Cooper's Anathema, and Stephen Palmer's A Second Infection. I really did enjoy Stephen Moss's story as well, though it felt too long. Surprisingly, I thought wouldn't like AI Deniers by Rosie Oliver. But her usage of a news caster to show a lot of what was happening "off paper" was clever.
Anathema (Jacob Cooper) and A Second Infection (Stephen Palmer) both have elements similar to each other. I guess I kind of liked the "sentience" idea of certain...things. Trying not to spoil much. Oh, and I really did LOVE the characters of Lost Colony (Josh Hayes), including that freakish sarcastic monkey (Michaelson's voice for him...yeah awesome), but the story ended a bit flat.
Many of these stories I would like to see expanded. Great beginning threads.
Overall, I'm rating this 5 stars. I think the stories on their own I'd give 4 stars as an aggregate, with the unsocial stories ranging from 3-5 stars. The reason for the 5 stars overall in Michaelson's performance. Even with some mediocre material he knocked it out of the park. Proof again that a narrator helps (or kills) an already good story. I swear the man has a vault of a thousand voices. Ive listened to a couple other of his performances, each very good.

Wanted to listen straight through!
Revisado: 06-17-16
This story MOVES! This isn't like a lot of space themed operas where everything is on a single ship. They are space battles, colonies, opposing forces all vying for control, and young Nathan Telford, the last of his family, navigating currents of hate and forces he can't control.
I'm looking forward to some of the forces introduced but not fully developed coming to fruition in the next book! Great concepts with some mystery that blends a bit of "magic" into what feels, at first, like a traditional space journey. Great universe!
