Historia
Should Christians be politically withdrawn, avoiding participation in politics to maintain their prophetic voice and to keep from being used as political pawns? Or should Christians be actively involved, seeking to utilize political systems to control the levers of power? In Jesus and the Powers, N. T. Wright and Michael F. Bird call Christians everywhere to discern the nature of Christian witness in fractured political environments.

A call to action for the Christian
Revisado: 09-11-24
An in-depth study as well as a call to action for Christians to approach politics and current events in light of the crucified and risen King, who reigns over all nations. The authors build a strong case for an approach to government that is theologically & politically thoughtful. Their words will challenge anyone seeking to follow Jesus in the 21st century. This approach is also a practical one for those whose aim is to seek to first God’s upside-down, already-but-not-yet Kingdom, no matter which temporary borders happen to surround you.

Historia
As a teenager and young man, Justin Lee felt deeply torn. Nicknamed "God Boy" by his peers, he knew that he was called to a life in the evangelical Christian ministry. But Lee harbored a secret: He also knew that he was gay. In this groundbreaking book, Lee recalls the events - his coming out to his parents, his experiences with the "ex-gay" movement, and his in-depth study of the Bible - that led him, eventually, to self-acceptance. But more than just a memoir, Torn provides insightful, practical guidance for all committed Christians who wonder how to relate to gay friends or family members - or who struggle with their own sexuality.

An articulate bridge-builder
Revisado: 08-06-24
You don’t have to agree with the author’s conclusions to appreciate his work. In fact, what struck me the most was the his desire for building bridges between people with theological differences. He does this in a way that honors the “high stakes” of one’s views about sexuality (by acknowledging we can’t both be right about what is and is not sin, for example). He also shows humility regarding his own convictions by speaking kindly and respectfully about Christians who have reached different conclusions, including fellow LGBTQ people in the Church. (People who are both LGBTQ and Christian are not a monolith, after all.) In short, Lee’s words and tone are a model for how Christians can grow in love and mutual respect for one another despite our differences.

Let's make a deal, you and me. Let's make promises to each other. I promise to tell you my story. The whole story. I'll tell you about a boy in love with Jesus, who, at the fateful onset of puberty, realized his sexual attractions were persistently and exclusively for other guys. I'll tell you how I lay on my bed in the middle of the night and whispered to myself the words I've whispered 1000 times since: "I'm gay." I'll show you the world through my eyes.

So much to learn from this Jesus-loving man.
Revisado: 06-10-24
This book gives language to the experience of countless people who often feel misunderstood both inside and outside the Church. The two things I appreciate most about this book are 1) The author’s vulnerability about his own journey of sacrificially following Jesus, no matter the cost, and 2) His humility, which for him is not mutually exclusive with the beliefs he happens to hold. As you listen, really listen. Listen to understand before evaluating whether you agree with him. Then, as Coles says to a friend of his in the book, be willing to wrestle with these age-old questions yourself so that you can live out of your own convictions rather than someone else’s. And, as Coles reminds us, God’s amazing grace is there and available to you on the other side for your journey - and in the middle of it.

Historia
Preston Sprinkle jumps into a compelling, passionate study of God’s perspective on violence. Examining both the seemingly angry, violent God of the Old Testament and the peacemaking Jesus of the New, Preston takes us back to Scripture to discern how God has really called His people to think and live in the midst of a violent world. He asks us to join him in inviting God to challenge our presuppositions, to set aside our biases and backgrounds and fears.

A Needed Challenge
Revisado: 05-07-24
In typical fashion, Preston Sprinkle takes a deep dive into a controversial topic, and does so compassionately. With grace and truth, he challenges his audience to view war through a theological (rather than political) lens. Most importantly, whether you agree with his position or not, he presents a strong biblical case for nonviolence. For Sprinkle, nonviolence goes hand-in-hand with following Jesus, the “Cruciform King.”

We all have questions about death. Despite the strong assurance the Bible gives us about life beyond the grave, Christians are often troubled by other questions. What will happen on the day of judgment? Will we have bodies in heaven? Will there be rewards? This short, simple book is designed to help Christians understand what God has said about these questions in the scripture. Suitable for all Christians - especially those with questions about death.

An engaging mix of cutting edge research and fair-minded analysis, Divided We Fall is an unblinking look at the true dimensions and dangers of the widening ideological gap, and what could happen if we don't take steps toward bridging it. French reveals chilling, plausible scenarios of how the United States could fracture into regions that will not only weaken the country but destabilize the world.

Refreshing
Revisado: 11-21-20
French offers us a warning that is rooted in realism rather than mere idealistic platitudes. His book is a reminder not to take the United States of America for granted, and he does that by diagnosing a bleak condition but also offering sound and reasonable solutions. Last but not least, embedded within this book is a fiction novella of sorts, and I simply could not stop listening when I reached those three chapters. 5 stars across the board.

Humble & Thorough
Revisado: 12-09-19
Solid job methodically walking through relevant Scripture passages in order to unpack his view. He also takes the time to thoughtfully & respectfully engage with well-known scholars with whom he disagrees. Yet he does all this with a posture of humility unlike what I have seen elsewhere. The title sums up Preston’s approach pretty well.

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

By far one of the best who-done-its I’ve ever read. The title really says it all. Other than maybe trying to a little too hard at the man-voices, the narrator nails it too, accents and all.

Historia
Can an evangelical theologian and his gay son overcome the differences in belief that threaten to destroy their relationship? For Brad and Drew Harper, that question wasn't theoretical - and neither was the resounding "yes" they found after years of struggle. Writing to each other with compassion, grit, and humor, Brad and Drew take us on their journey as parent and child - from the churches of Middle America to the penthouses of New York's party scenes, from a pastor's-kid childhood and painful conversion therapy to the hard-won victories of their adult relationship.
