Historia
There was a time when being an "Arab" didn't mean you were necessarily Muslim. It was a time when Oscar Hayoun, a Jewish Arab, strode along the Nile in a fashionable suit, long before he and his father arrived at the port of Haifa to join the Zionist state only to find themselves hosed down with DDT and then left unemployed on the margins of society. In that time, Arabness was a mark of cosmopolitanism, of intellectualism.

There are books that you read or lucky to hear by the author’s own voice and know that they will leave a mark on you for the rest of your life. This book is IT. Well researched, human story based on real people. Incredible from begining to end. I did not want this book to end. Although I was in tears more times than I can remember, there was a sweetness about this very real human story. It was relatable. Even though, I don’t share the author’s faith. It was like he was telling a story that belongs to me. Even if it doesn’t. It belongs to my tribe with its many varied colors, sounds, smells and customs. He was able to grasp what unites all Arabs within those pages told with love and non judgement. Beautiful piece of work. Thank you for writing this book. It uplifts the spirits and gives context to the struggle we feel from one side of the globe to the other. It does what it’s supposed to do.

Historia
Funny and touching, Behind You Is the Sea brings us into the homes and lives of three main families—the Baladis, the Salamehs, and the Ammars—Palestinian immigrants who’ve all found a different welcome in America. Their various fates and struggles cause their community dynamic to sizzle and sometimes explode: The wealthy Ammar family employs young Maysoon Baladi, whose own family struggles financially, to clean up after their spoiled teenagers. Meanwhile, Marcus Salameh confronts his father in an effort to protect his younger sister for “dishonoring” their name.

The humanity of the characters
Revisado: 01-12-25
This book made me laugh, cry and feel all the feelings in between. The characters were full, deep and representative of a sliver of that Arab diaspora in America. The longing and nostalgia for the homeland is well characterized and deeply touching.

Historia
Uncertainty is one of the defining issues of our time. Certainty has a habit of slipping away, further into our futures and we now have to deal with the uncertainties of our present, every day. When we can no longer make sense of the world together, insecurity takes over. We develop anxiety and confusion about our purpose, and in searching for certainty find it in autocratic leaders and populism. Democracy begins to fade as our uncertainty grows.

Disappointing: biased and flawed.

This book is a great idea as a concept but lacked in execution. I was looking forward to reading this book for months. I am sourly disappointed by this book. Felt repetitive and he is rehashing the same ideas over and over again in different format to fill the pages. I was disappointed with the bias tone the author undertook about certain ethnic groups, that he kept referring to in the book. I am not sure I can trust an author who plugs is his own biases about certain ethnic and religious groups and lacks the ability to self-reflect on his own group. The point of this book after all was to keep an open mind and foster cognitive flexibility enough to be able to be critical, and embrace uncertainty how ironic!

Historia
Drawing on a wealth of untapped archival materials and the reports of generations of family members - mayors, judges, scholars, diplomats, and journalists - The Hundred Years' War on Palestine upends accepted interpretations of the conflict, which tend, at best, to describe a tragic clash between two peoples with claims to the same territory. Instead, Khalidi traces a hundred years of colonial war on the Palestinians, waged first by the Zionist movement and then Israel, but backed by Britain and the United States, the great powers of the age.

This eloquent book translates attachment theory and research into an innovative framework that grounds adult psychotherapy in the facts of childhood development. Advancing a model of treatment as transformation through relationship, the author integrates attachment theory with neuroscience, trauma studies, relational psychotherapy, and the psychology of mindfulness.

Bible of psychotherapy & attachment theory

I consider this book the Bible of psychotherapy. If you can read only one book on psychotherapy, read this.
