Historia
By tracing the long and turbulent history of the Zulus from their arrival in South Africa and the establishment of Zululand, The Zulus at War is an important and readable addition to this popular subject area. It describes the violent rise of King Shaka and his colorful successors under whose leadership the warrior nation built a fearsome fighting reputation without equal among the native tribes of South Africa.

A Must Read. Amazing and informative.
Revisado: 07-14-24
This is a story that needs to be shared in schools and in all spheres where people have a desire to know or should know the history of one of Africa's most noble people. It is a story that shows how the culture of the Zulu and the Europeans clashed and how the deceptiveness and greed of the Europeans led to the destruction of the once great Zulu nation.

Would have been very good but for the gratuitous use of the "F" word
Revisado: 06-11-24
This was a very good thriller that was marred by the unnecessary use of the "F" word. The author used it as a noun, an adjective, an adverb, a pronoun in a manner that demonstrated his limited vocabulary. He has a skill for weaving a great story but it was that skill was diminished by his versions of "F" in almost every setting. None of its use was necessary. He surely could have come up with the adverbs, verbs, etc to make a point, unless he lacks the vocabulary and this is his default

Incredible Story of Courage in the midst of unspeakable horror
Revisado: 01-01-24
This novel kept me tied to my headphones. The story of two women who dared show bravery, courage and unbelievable strength when fear controlled most of the people under the Nazis. The author did an excellent job of telling a compelling story of two very different women whose moral consciences dictated their willingness to help others and do all they could to destroy the Nazis. This is a must read for anyone interested in the lives of women who defied the Nazis

Historia
General Sherman's 1864 burning of Atlanta solidified his legacy as a ruthless leader. Yet Sherman proved far more complex than his legendary military tactics reveal. James Lee McDonough offers fresh insight into a man tormented by the fear that history would pass him by, who was plagued by personal debts, and who lived much of his life separated from his family.

Well written. Balanced. Thoroughly destroyed myths about Sherman
Revisado: 11-23-23
This book opened my eyes to the human Sherman who was clearly a bigot, a racist and Confederate apologist I grew up with the myth of him being a saviour to enslaved African Americans. However the author has done a remarkable job of dispelling that myth and showed Sherman as an arrogant conceited man who had little regard for the rights of the African Americans. His hatred of Mexicans and I Indians was equally surprising. Take away the military victories and Sherman is seen for what he really was. Appreciation for the author's writing about Sherman without succumbing to the myths of his greatness.

Historia
"My father had more than 50 children." So begins the haunting memoir of Anna LeBaron, daughter of the notorious polygamist and murderer Ervil LeBaron. With her father wanted by the FBI for killing anyone who tried to leave his cult - a radical branch of Mormonism - Anna and her siblings were constantly on the run with the other sister-wives. Often starving and always desperate, the children lived in terror. Even though there were dozens of them together, Anna always felt alone.

Disappointing
Revisado: 11-11-23
I thought I was going to read about polygamy and looked forward to gaining an understanding of its practices. Instead I read a book light on polygamy and heavy on finding Jesus. Audible put this book under True Crime but very little dealt on the subject. Audible misleads those looking for a story of true crime. This book belongs under religion. This book is primarily about Anna LeBaron leaving the cult of her father and finding "salvation" in a Christian group.
As a story about finding Jesus, Anna's story is very touching. And a good read for those seeking such stories. As a story of her life as the daughter of a polygamist, it falls way short and only skims the surface.

Good Read. Dervla knows how to keep you interested. This story is full of twists and turns such that you want to keep listening. She sets out the story in a very intriguing manner that keeps you hooked.
I discovered Derva McTiernan's writings and Cormack Riley a few years ago and was so captivated that I started looking for her books. Blocked from getting her books on basis they were not available in my country. When I saw this one, I downloaded immediately. Can't wait to listen to her next Cormack Riley saga

Ridiculous and Absurd
Revisado: 06-25-22
I tried to finish this book but the escapades of Ginger became more unbelievable as the book progressed. I had enough of the truly absurd endeavours of Ginger Mitchell. It is beyond belief that a recently "retired" escort would suddenly become a private investigator and in the space of two weeks solve three cases rescue a second trafficked victim and steal bags of money from a Russian mobster. Added to this is the ghost of Ginger's mother who is always there at the house. Maybe the author intended dec for this to be a farcical tale, and if so, he succeeded.

Historia
For the past few hundred years, most of what we’ve been taught about the native cultures of North America came from reports authored by the conquerors and colonizers who destroyed them. Now - with the technological advances of modern archaeology and a new perspective on world history - we are finally able to piece together their compelling true stories. In Ancient Civilizations of North America, Professor Edwin Barnhart, Director of the Maya Exploration Center, will open your eyes to a fascinating world you never knew existed - even though you’ve been living right next to it, or even on top of it.

Professor Barnhart provides a very good overall review of ancient civilisations of North America. However, I felt that his presentation failed to give adequate attention to the people of the Atlantic region, especially the Algonquin.

Not worth the listen
Revisado: 02-16-22
Expected a more thoughtful or in-depth story of women who kill but got a superficial incomplete story of women who kill. Some famous women are not even mentioned. The narrator had an almost flippant delivery that made it sound as if it was a chat with friends. This would have been better suited for a television program.

Historia
On a sunny morning in May 1939, a phalanx of 867 women - housewives, doctors, opera singers, politicians, prostitutes - was marched through the woods 50 miles north of Berlin, driven on past a shining lake, then herded in through giant gates. Whipping and kicking them were scores of German women guards. Their destination was Ravensbrück, a concentration camp designed specifically for women by Heinrich Himmler, prime architect of the Holocaust.

A Must Read
Revisado: 02-13-22
This is a must read for anyone who wants to have a complete story of the concentration camps snd the treatment of women who were imprisoned in them. There are many stories about the extermination camps that killed millions of Jews but almost nothing about the other extermination camps such as Ravensbruck. The author tells a deeply moving and horrifying story of women of various nationalities and religion subjected to the most barbaric treatment and the complicity of some of today's most well known international companies. It is thorough in its detail of the operation of this hell hole calked Ravensbruck.
