Historia
In this witty, often terrifying work of cultural criticism, Postman chronicles our transformation into a Technopoly: a society that no longer merely uses technology as a support system but instead is shaped by it. According to Postman, technology is rapidly gaining sovereignty over social institutions and national life to become self-justifying, self-perpetuating, and omnipresent. He warns that this will have radical consequences for the meanings of politics, art, religion, family, education, and more.

The Postman delivers
Revisado: 01-07-24
32 years after it was written, this book is more relevant and needed than when it was initially penned. Our descent into technopolyhas continued full speed ahead. Postman provides a sane critique of the crisis we find ourselves in. If only he had more solutions.

Entertaining but shallow
Revisado: 07-12-23
This series was a fun listen but felt a little like a Harry Potter knock off without the depth of story.

Just wow
Revisado: 03-05-23
About five minutes into chapter three, Tolkien begins to play piano and sing and continues to do so till the end of the audiobook. It's truly amazing. I'd heard his reading voice before. But his singing voice! I had not idea how strong and rich it would be and how jaunty his piano playing would make those tunes. Just hearing him sing was worth far more than the price of the audiobook.

Historia
With this updated edition of his earlier book, A Place of My Own, listeners can revisit the inspired, intelligent, and often hilarious story of Pollan’s realization of a room of his own—a small, wooden hut, his “shelter for daydreams” — built with his admittedly unhandy hands. Inspired by both Thoreau and Mr. Blandings, A Place of My Own not only works to convey the history and meaning of all human building, it also marks the connections between our bodies, our minds, and the natural world.

A great walk through the history of architecture and human relationships with the buildings we inhabit through the lens of a novice building a place of his own.

Historia
In a time when our relationship to the natural world is ruled by the violence and greed of unbridled consumerism, Wendell Berry speaks out in these prescient essays, drawn from his 50-year campaign on behalf of American lands and communities. The writings gathered in The World-Ending Fire are the unique product of a life spent farming the fields of rural Kentucky with mules and horses, and of the rich, intimate knowledge of the land cultivated by this work.

Revisado: 06-19-22
Wendell Berry is one our best writers, excelling in essays, fiction, and poetry like few others (like Tolkien and Lewis). This collection of essays from his long career is truly prophetic, speaking essential truth. And Nick Offerman provides an equally excellent reading.

Historia
North America was settled by people with distinct religious, political, and ethnographic characteristics, creating regional cultures that have been at odds with one another ever since. Subsequent immigrants didn't confront or assimilate into an "American" or "Canadian" culture, but rather into one of the 11 distinct regional ones that spread over the continent each staking out mutually exclusive territory. In American Nations, Colin Woodard leads us on a journey through the history of our fractured continent....

Great observations, mediocre conclusions
Revisado: 07-16-21
Such a fascinating concept. These “nations” don’t actually exist, but he offers a plausible explanation for how and why America has been the way it has been. But yikes, his conclusions are so mediocre. His dislike of the South and love for French Canada skew him to the far left after a fairly evenhanded book.

Ella has a Thing. She sees a classmate grow up to become a caring nurse. A neighbor's son murdered in a drive-by shooting. Things that haven't happened yet. Kev, born while Los Angeles burned around them, wants to protect his sister from a power that could destroy her. But when Kev is incarcerated, Ella must decide what it means to watch her brother suffer while holding the ability to wreck cities in her hands. Rooted in the hope that can live in anger, Riot Baby is as much an intimate family story as a global dystopian narrative.

Disappointing
Revisado: 06-18-21
I loved The Hate U Give and other novels that express the complexities of the Black experience in America. This has some powerful moments but falls far short, giving up on nuance characters and going with cartoonish villains. And when it comes down to it, hatred is not freedom.

My name is Kvothe. You may have heard of me. So begins a tale told from his own point of view - a story unequaled in fantasy literature. Now in The Wise Man’s Fear, Day Two of The Kingkiller Chronicle, Kvothe takes his first steps on the path of the hero and learns how difficult life can be when a man becomes a legend in his own time.

Tries way too hard
Revisado: 03-19-20
When Rothfuss simply writes his story, he’s a good world builder and story teller. But he tries way too hard to be a poetic writer and he makes me cringe over and over and over again. The cavorting with Felurian was dreadful. Almost every line was forced and overly flowery. And his moralizing against barbarian sexual ethics was condescending and pedantic. An evil tree that knows everything is a great idea. The social hierarchy of sending rings was brilliant. That’s what he excels at. Trying to be a poet and a philosopher is where he’s worse than most.

Mattie and Brewster are normal, typical 16-year-old twins who live with their normal, boring parents: Martin and Gwen Banks. Normal and boring, that is, until the day their father's best friend shows up at their house - dressed in what appears to be a bathrobe. The next thing Mattie and Brewster know, their parents are frozen like human statues in their living room, the guy in the bathrobe has vanished, and they need to find answers - fast.

I'm still laughing and wiping my eyes of the tears. I don't know if this is my favorite book in the series, but Luke Daniels puts in his best performance, especially as Magnus and Magnus. This gets an immediate relisten.

Disappointment
Revisado: 05-31-19
I was halfway through the book when I realized that nothing had happened. Just a bunch of talking. No action. Now, a book can be great without cramming action scenes down our throats, but this was just sheer boredom. The first three books were fun. But the fun ran out and the series fizzled. Thankfully, it's done now.
