What an exciting listen! Whew! Sorry for all the exclamation marks. Listen and you’ll understand. The story spoke to me on so many levels.

I enjoyed the ebook of A Haunting at the Gates of Hell: Part 1, The Nightmare, so much I used one of my audible credits to download the audiobook and was very pleased with Joe Hempel's narration. Roma Gray is an exceptional writer; I read the ebook first and the pages flew by way too fast. I think I'll buy all the parts as soon as they come out on audible. listen to them immediately, then binge on them on long, rainy afternoons.

Do you want to know the date of your death? I don’t. The thought terrifies me. In this first of a series of novellas, we’re first introduced to a group of writers who believe they do know the date they will die – and it’s in just a couple of days.

One of the writers volunteers his mansion on the beach as a haven where they can shelter and either ride out their death date or die. Unfortunately, the house appears to have a malevolent personality of its own. Could this be true? Can a house be evil, or is there something, or someone, in the tunnels under the house? Will the writers actually die on that date?

I enjoyed this novella; the characters were fleshed out so well I cared for several very quickly. The larger world concept was unique but based on facts that were brought in and presented so I could easily enter into the reality of the world outside Mirror House.

Recommended, especially if you’re a fan of mysteries, haunted houses, gothic horror, or Agatha Christie.

BY THE TIME YOU FEEL THE PINCH, THE BARB HAS SET

King once said, “If you’ve missed Laymon, you’ve missed a treat.” If you followed King’s advice and read Laymon and found it a treat, or you’re a fan of Lovecraft, Blackwood, Ketcham, or Machen, you're in for a treat for sure with these bold tales.

Mark Anthony Smith has delivered a deliciously creepy mix of stories touching on subjects ranging from the disquiet that begins when something is forgotten, through the effects of the withdrawals from cannibalism, to a pact with the strangest creatures yet. There are stories that you will read with a growing sense of unease, stories that will make you afraid to go camping in the woods ever again, such as where a friend steps out of the light, away from the circle of safety and doesn’t return, and stories of ancient trees filled with animus. I've felt that in the trees, haven't you? Now Smith has put the detailed pictures in my head, and I'll never go back.

If you are like me, you won’t be able to shake the image of the man who climbs inside a farmer’s warm and sticky carcass, like a grizzly overcoat to disguise himself from the monsters, then pulls the skull over his head. Smith’s world is populated by beings with animal features: cloven feet like a goat, scales and pelts, talons, claws, rats’ whiskers, gelatinous bodies, snouts, and tails. Smith explores our fears and thrusts them upon us. In every story, the disquiet grows gradually as the hooks, the claws, or the talons sink into the scaly flesh. By the time the victim feels the pinch, it's too late; the barb has set. It was already too late for me when I picked up Smith’s book. And there is so much more than I could cover here.

Highly recommended.

Maybe I’ll give it another try someday but it seemed like list after list. Sure chain of custody is important but I just couldn’t take it. I’m sure it was me - I have chills and fever today. I’ll give it another go when I’m well. Sorry.

Brandon Ford's Open Wounds is often discomforting yet I could not stop reading because the action is wild and Kate, the protagonist, is fiercely alive. I felt that I knew Kate personally and I couldn't put down the story until I knew what happened to her in the end. Did I say great character, did I mention suspense? Joyce Carol Oates said, "My belief is that art should not be comforting; for comfort, we have mass entertainment and one another. Art should provoke, disturb, arouse our emotions, expand our sympathies in directions we may not anticipate and may not even wish.” She could have been referring to Open Wounds. I switched between Kindle and Audible and enjoyed both.

First in a highly anticipated series, time to jump in and let the moments of fear take you by surprise, and fall in love, as I did, with Lucy the Chihuahua and PI Monica McDowney as she tracks down ultimate evil, risking her life and everything she holds dear, losing in some cases, winning in others. Take a deep breath before you begin. When this author's on a roll, you'll forget to breathe. I'm hoping for a sequel, soon!

A normal day, then the unknown assaults the people, the descriptions are subtle yet bold. The author is sly metering the fear--the cadence of the narrator's voice matching his steps as he runs … as I read I suddenly noticed that my own heart was pounding. And it only gets more tense -- the narrator finds himself frightfully alone, the story becomes even more claustrophobic as the author skillfully draws in all the threads he's hidden, pulls them in around you, tighter and tighter . . .

There are so many depths to this Black Water experience that I just want to listen to it repeatedly. Roma's writing is truly amazing. She has crafted an incredible story. Eighteen minutes! I can't believe it. You won't either. It will echo in your mind long after you're done as you recall your own fears, the ones you just can't overcome.

What can you think of that's more terrifying than children in trouble with no lifeline? No adult that knows where they are? How does Roma Gray think of these horrible situations then make them so real that I remembered my own childhood, all the times I took chances that could have left me in the same dire circumstances. From the other reviews, so did everyone else! I was biting my nails, hoping, just hoping, that everything would turn out okay … for everyone … it doesn't always, does it? Remember, this is a horror story.
