Historia
The sign welcoming travelers to Maggody, Arkansas, reads "Pop. 755," and don't expect Hizzoner Jim Bob to repaint it just because there's someone new in town. The mayor won't go out of his way for anyone, especially someone wicked—and a woman who would open a pawnshop in Maggody must be very wicked indeed. Kayleen Smeltner decided to open the shop after her husband was killed during a burglary. She came to Maggody expecting peace and quiet, but she'll find this quaint little patch of nowhere isn't as peaceful as it seems.

Great nonviolent entertainment; Hess gets more entertaining with each new book!
Revisado: 06-26-24
The Maggody series are wonderfully entertaining without lots of vicarious sex or violence, just the best remedy for today’s news , which features both with no redeeming virtues!

The best way to relaxed sleep!
Revisado: 09-30-23
I set the timer to 45 minutes, and turn down the sound, turn off my ipad, and set it just out of reach when I am lying down. Usually I am asleep long before it ends! Also great aid if you are awakened in the middle of the night, and want to go back to sleep. It helps focus away from worries or physical discomforts. The sound track is very soothing.

Historia
An unexpected death on a lonely road outside of Utah’s Bears Ears National Park raises questions for Navajo Tribal Police officers Jim Chee and Bernadette Manuelito. Why would a seasoned outdoorsman and well-known paleontologist freeze to death within walking distance of his car? A second death brings more turmoil. Who is the unidentified man killed during a home invasion where nothing seems to have been taken? Why was he murdered? An illicit business, a fossilized jaw bone, hints of witchcraft, and a mysterious disappearance during a blizzard add to the peril.

Good story; however the narration was not an enhancement
Revisado: 04-29-23
A very good story line could have been better developed with more dialogue and less explanatory information. The larger problem was with the inability of the narrator to differentiate voices of the various characters. She also ended most sentences with a descending tone, which created a sort of rhythmic effect. I think I would prefer to have read this book rather than listening to it.

Historia
After 16 novels, Jacqueline Winspear has taken the bold step of turning to memoir, revealing the hardships and joys of her family history. Both shockingly frank and deftly restrained, her story tackles the difficult, poignant, and fascinating family accounts of her paternal grandfather’s shell shock; her mother’s evacuation from London during the Blitz; and her soft-spoken animal-loving father’s torturous assignment to an explosives team during WWII.

An Incredible Life
Revisado: 02-03-22
I t is difficult to believe how her family lived in England in the 50s, 60s , and 70’s.
How many jobs she had first as a child and as a teen and later as a young adult, are stories in themselves. Above all, her family relationships, which were strengthened through many difficulties are truly inspiring. It demonstrates what strength of character can overcome. I also think few Americans comprehend how much the people of England suffered and lost from the consequences of the World Wars. This is what the author makes real in her books.

Great classic mystery
Revisado: 10-17-21
The story is complex and entertaining. The only problem is the narration . Although the narrator reads well and with emotion, it is very difficult to distinguish among the various characters, as the narrator has only one “voice” for all of them. This is particularly problematic as more characters are introduced into the narrative.

Historia
What begins as a typical day for Officer Bernadette Manuelito - serving a bench warrant, dealing with a herd of cattle obstructing traffic, and stumbling across a crime scene - takes an unexpected twist when she’s called to help find an old friend. Years ago, Bernie and Maya were roommates, but time and Maya’s struggles with addiction drove them apart. Now Maya’s brother asks Bernie to find out what happened to his sister. Tracing Maya’s whereabouts, Bernie learns that her old friend had confessed to the murder of her estranged husband, a prominent astronomer.

A Good Read, but Rather Simple Story Line
Revisado: 05-30-21
I think a woman’s story should have a woman’s voice, as J.A. Jance’s Joanna Brady, Janet Evanovitch’s Stephanie Plum, and of course Elizabeth Peters’ Amelia Peabody
While this narrator read with emotion , basically all the males sounded very similar to one another, as did the voices of the women characters, with little variation in tone or timbre. Additionally, the narrator should familiarize themselves with the correct pronunciations of local place names, as Canyon De Chelly, as well as words unfamiliar to them- like ki’bitz ( which is vastly different from kibbutz’).

A Thoughtful and Enlightening Insight to Consequences of War
Revisado: 05-23-21
As a high school teacher of history, I was long familiar with aspects of militarism, nationalism, and imperialism considered causative in WW I, The Great War as it became known, but not on the effects on people as individuals.
Jacqueline Winspear’s Masie Dobbs books bring forward little known facts, as well as the enduring human costs for the British people. The terrible and lasting effects of poison gas and other weaponry introduced in this war, and even the medical treatments used on the survivors all give greater insights on the true toll of this war,and particularly its lasting after effects. I highly recommend the series, which I am now reading for a second time.
