Good, but became repetitive
Revisado: 04-20-23
The story was good, and brought to light issues with human relationships and aging. The narrator with stellar and it was well written for the most part. At the beginning I was engaged with the story and applauded it, having worked as a social worker with the senior population for years, But over the course of the book It became repetitive and tedious. I lost interest. I would say it's a worthy effort that could have been more concise.

Great Narrator
Revisado: 03-29-23
The story of an elderly man struggling with the pain of living was compelling at first. In the last third of the book I felt tricked, as a reader, by a plot twist that could have been better deployed. after that, it was hard to accept the book as a whole.

Historia
It was four o'clock in the morning. A young woman pushed through the hospital doors. Staff would later say they thought the woman was a new mother, returning to her child - and in a way, she was. She walked into the nursery, where a baby girl lay sleeping. The infant didn't wake when the woman placed her gently in the shopping bag she had brought with her. There is CCTV footage of what happened next, and most Australians would have seen it, either on the internet or the news.

Yes, it's sad but....
Revisado: 03-06-23
It's sad, but isn't life full of sadness? And don't we learn from it? In fact, we learn more from the hard things then from the easy things.
This author had much to say about family, commitment, perseverance, and said it well. And also so well read!
Thank you Audible. The expectation that a free book will be disappointing is disproven by many of the free audible offerings. Other books by this author will definitely get my attention.

From Martin Clark - praised by Entertainment Weekly as "our best legal-thriller writer" - comes a wickedly clever, tenderhearted, and intricately plotted novel about a hard-luck lawyer's refusal to concede defeat, even as fate, the court system, and a gang of untouchable con artists conspire against him.

Too many murders mysteries are upper middle class couple, someone in the family is a murderer, or someone in the family is a victim or both. This was not that. It kept me interested and was well written, well performed.

despite my sympathy I cannot finish this story
Revisado: 09-26-22
First let me say, this young woman is an excellent writer. She conveys her inner feelings and interactions with the rest of the world in a very moving way. Probably if the book were read by someone else I could have listened to it all . It was hard for me to listen, as it's been for some others.
The monotone style was difficult for me, but, even so, it did convey a sadness that was appropriate to the story. It's hard to admit, but my own intolerance for the way young people end words that have an "N" sound in the last syllable grates on my nerves. I think you would call it elided. They leave off the vowel in the final syllable and emphasize the letter N. anyway, what a picky thing, but I couldn't deal with it.
I would recommend the book to those who aren't sensitive to language and maybe are less grumpy.

Disappointment
Revisado: 09-24-22
What a promising title. And it was an editor's pick which often means it will be a good book. I anticipated fine prose, character development and an enveloping story. It delivered exactly none of these.
It did deliver an awareness of the political and social issues of Puerto Rico for which I gave two stars. That is a worthy cause, clearly close to the author's heart.
Shortly into the book I felt rushed., as though the author was trying to get through the various stories to reach her real objectivr of promoting justice for Puerto Rico.
This is one of those rare books that should have been longer. More effort could have put into story development. A more leisurely pace to give the reader an opportunity to know and love the characters. It felt more like a movie pitch than an actual novel to be read. Frankly, it would make a good movie. probably a far better movie than book in the hands of good scriptwriter.
I slogged through it just to say I finished. I do not recommend, but look for the movie. It might be worth seeing.

Historia
Like a well-crafted stage play, Just Passin' Thru delivers one suspenseful scene after another. But in this historic setting a store on the Appalachian Trail called Mountain Crossings the characters who show up are no fictional creations. Like any good drama, there are the good guys (and gals) and the weirdos, too. Some show up once (and that’s enough), and some appear again and again. But all are united by two things: the author’s story-capturing talent, and whatever it is that lures them to attempt (or conquer) a 2,200-mile path that climbs and plummets from Georgia to Maine.

Somewhat Disappointing
Revisado: 12-25-21
It's hard to say if it was the narration or the writing that made this book somewhat disappointing. As a former hiker I was motivated to listen and have pleasurably listened to other hiking sagas. It's the only thing I can do since I have injuries and I'm old.
I certainly expected characters and they were there. Some should have jumped off the page. Part of the problem was the seeming disdain the author held for many of those he encountered. You have to love the character for his own sake without making too many judgments. The author looked down on some of them which took away the joy of their oddities.
The bigger problem for me though was the narrator. He has a smooth and lovely voice and reads beautifully but many times accents were called for. For occasional characters he delivered a weak inauthentic southern accent. I have family in that area and I know what they sound like. A narrator who could deliver the right kind of accents was sorely needed in this book. But then, In fairness to the narrator, it didn't sound like the author wrote the dialogue with much regional influence.
There are other books of this type I would recommend long before I would recommend this.

The references to the author's experience is pertinent to the story so it's difficult to understand reviewers who complain. It was an unfortunate and intriguing story well-told
