Historia
Archaeologist Verity Grey has been drawn to the dark legends of the Scottish Borderlands in search of the truth buried in a rocky field by the sea. Her eccentric boss has spent his whole life searching for the resting place of the lost Ninth Roman Legion and is convinced he's finally found it - not because of any scientific evidence, but because a local boy has "seen" a Roman soldier walking in the fields, a ghostly sentinel who guards the bodies of his long-dead comrades.

Pleasant, but not really worth the time.
Story/plot line wandered aimlessly. Characters were not well differentiate d. Narrator Sally Armstrong bravely pushed and pulled the book along.

Something of a bait and switch ...
Revisado: 02-09-19
I kept 'turning the pages', wondering what the whole point might be. Then I was sorry I'd bothered.
Some nice writing now and then, spoiled by wretched stereotypes -- the psycopathic character must be adopted, you know! Improbable circumstances and events. Long withheld reveals usually not worth the waiting. I objected to some sudden extreme sadism interjected rather pointlessly about two-thirds through the book. The main characters tended to generally be more than a little dippy, which I wouldn't have minded, except for how they were used/abused in the story line. Helen Duff, the narrator was generally very listenable, except for the menacing accent given the young Russian woman. Why was this??

Historia
Peggy Seeger is one of folk music's most influential artists and songwriters. Born in New York in 1935, her childhood was steeped in music and left-wing politics; they remain her lifeblood. Always a rebel, she traveled to Russia and China against US advice before arriving in London, where she met the much older (and already married) man with whom she would raise three children and share the next 33 years: Ewan MacColl. Together, they helped lay the foundations of the British folk revival.

Disappointing book for me. I didn't get far into it. The author droned on and on in excruciating detail.
I'm sure it contains EVERYTHING about her life, the people and places she knew, etc. I guess my expectations may have been too high, or perhaps I should have hung in there longer. Frankly, I was bored.

Ten years later, now a radio producer at the BBC, Juliet is unexpectedly confronted by figures from her past. A different war is being fought now, but Juliet finds herself once more under threat.

Disappointment for me...
Revisado: 11-11-18
To my surprise, since I've liked Kate Atkinson very much in other works, I found 'Transcription' tedious.
I think that the book would have been much more interesting if were an actual historical account.

Simply couldn't get into these characters. Read 'A Gentleman In Moscow' first, and loved it, so was surprised at being so disappointed in this Towles novel.

Historia
Frances Hodgson Burnett published The Making of a Marchioness in 1901. She had written Little Lord Fauntleroy 15 years before and would write The Secret Garden in 10 years' time; it is these two books for which she is best known. Yet Marchioness was one of Nancy Mitford's favourite books, was considered 'the best novel Mrs Hodgson Burnett wrote' by Marghanita Laski, and is taught on a university course in America together with novels such as Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and Daisy Miller.

Pleasant surprise
Revisado: 06-08-18
I expected a typical light-weight story of manners and virtues -- yes, but not so light-weight!
The boundaries of the genre were pushed to express a great deal more than expected.
The narrator, Lucy Scott, turned in a fine interpretation, and she has a lovely voice, well-suited to the work.
What impressed me the most was the intelligence and grace of the writing, which only got better and better as the story unfolded. I will look at more from Frances Hodgson-Burnett!

A book that will stay with me....
Revisado: 05-14-18
'A Gentleman in Moscow' is a manual on how to be a civilized human being -- educated, tolerant, kind, attentive, patient, appreciative, loyal, and humorous. I loved this book, and Nicholas Guy Smith was the perfect narrator for it.
This is a book that needs to be savored at leisure. Speed reading is not advised.
