Excellent-Don't Hesitate...
Revisado: 05-09-24
I love Baldacci's books and look forward to every release. This one was the best I had ever listened to from beginning to end. I am hoping he turns it into a series. I felt as though he had empathy for the characters and was honest and realistic in the opening he gave that the perspective was from his own. There have been few books lately that have grabbed me and yet when I do come across one I find myself wishing it wouldn't end. Don't hesitate to listen you won't be disappointed.

Not For Me
Revisado: 03-19-24
I really tried to get through this. I mean I gave it 6 hours of my time. I had listened to another one of Beevis' novels and really enjoyed and had looked forward to this one. However, the first story seemed to drag on. I could see where it was going and the mystery as well as the story had the potential to be a very good thriller but it just wasn't getting there. Additionally, and this is just my personal preference, I can do without the romance and sexual tension in my thrillers. Leave it for Harlequin please.

Historia
Masterfully blending elements of psychological suspense and true crime, Jessica Knoll—bestselling author of Luckiest Girl Alive and the writer behind the Netflix adaptation starring Mila Kunis—delivers an “unflinching and evocative” (Laura Dave, New York Times bestselling author) thriller in Bright Young Women. The book opens on a Saturday night in 1978, hours before a soon-to-be-infamous murderer descends upon a Florida sorority house with deadly results. The lives of those who survive, including a sorority president and key witness, Pamela Schumacher, are forever changed.

I don’t know how to start this review- I have been so bored with “thrillers” and crime novels lately audible won’t let me return anymore. And while I will say “the defendant” in this story is reminiscent of one very well known character I believe that was the point. It wasn’t about him-for once. The author gave a voice to these extraordinary women-fictional yes but she brought them to life in a way we so rarely see in the true crime docudramas that have become so popular. I loved this book. I loved the way it went into the past and was able to connect Ruth with Tina with Pamela weaving into the present. There is no closure for grief only finding ways to live with it.

Journey to the Self
Revisado: 08-15-21
Kate Nason's story is not unique in the sense that many women have gone through bad marriages and infidelity only to keep repeating the pattern. Were it not for the national scandal her "ordinary" story wouldn't be worth listening to. This, however, wasn't a story about a national scandal or the ex-President's mistress. This was a story about a woman that survived a horrific traumatic event while pregnant with her first child, who, while still healing thought she found safety in a second marriage. This is about a woman who was always told she could not trust her own instincts, her own voice in her head, and therefore made decisions much like we all do. What I heard from Kate was her journey from the messages she received about who she thought she should be as a half that was incomplete without a man to a woman fully fulfilled with herself. I heard her talk about as women we need to be supporting each other more. I heard her talk about breaking harmful patterns that keep us stuck. I heard her talk about the love she had for her children and how fiercely she wanted to protect them. This book was not about a national scandal, this book was about Kate Nason and the experiences that led her to the full and complete person she is today.

Historia
Leigh Collier has worked hard to build what looks like a normal life. She has a good job as a defense attorney, a daughter doing well in school, and even her divorce is relatively civilized - her life is just as unremarkable as she’d always hoped it would be. But Leigh’s ordinary life masks a childhood that was far from average...a childhood tarnished by secrets, broken by betrayal, and finally torn apart by a devastating act of violence.

Best Book I've Listened to In a Long While
Revisado: 07-28-21
I have have loved all of Karin Slaughter's books and this definitely didn't disappoint. I found the relationship between the two sisters to be heartfelt and heartbreaking at the same time. I felt like Slaughter did a great job talking about addiction and how that influenced the relationship between the two. AND then there was the crazy psychopath.... the whole story was fantastic.
To those complaining about Slaughter "lecturing" about Covid... Sensitive much? There was no lecturing-- The Covid talk was more about describing a situation-i.e. I walked into the office there was hand sanitizer and disposable masks, or I took off my mask after I sat down. She talked about addiction far more than she talked about Covid-I even think she talked about about child abuse more than she talked about Covid so if you inclined to stop listening because you're that sensitive I'd say your loss. This is a great book.

Nothing infuriates me more than a book that is packaged as a new release when it has in fact been in print and audio for years. We will see if audible even prints this review as they have neglected to print reviews for other books I’ve made the same criticisms of in the past. The Last Anniversary was published in 2006- there is nothing different about this release. I’ll be returning.

Disappointing End to a Long Awaited Conclusion
Revisado: 04-01-17
*POSSIBLE SPOILERS*
I was so incredibly excited when I saw this book in the "Featured Pre-Orders" section, having loved Natchez Burning and the Bone Tree I could not wait for it's release. To begin, I find most people love or hate Scott Brick--I love him but did find his performance in this book to be somewhat over dramatic. That being said, it wasn't intolerable to me.
Moving on, I have to admit I was really hoping that Caitlin's death was some sort of play by the FBI to protect her as a federal witness. While her death was fitting considering her penchant towards putting herself in dangerous situations I felt as though having Penn Cage lose two women who played such a prominent role in his life was somewhat setting him up for martyrdom. Additionally, I assume making Caitlin pregnant at the time of her death was to add to Penn's grief. Yet, his ability to move so swiftly into another sexual relationship was intensely disappointing for me. He states, at one point to his sister, "I haven't been with anyone since Caitlin's death"...but Caitlin had only been dead for 3 months! Had Isles spent any time expressing some inner conflict held by Cage in entering this relationship, I may have found it more respectable. As it was, I found this aspect of the novel to do an exceptional disservice to Caitlin's memory as well as the longstanding relationship they had held.
Next, I found the courtroom scenes unrealistic, specifically the cross examination of Dr. Cage. While it was certainly established that Avery's performance at the beginning of the trial seemed incompetent, at the time of the cross examination that had supposedly changed. And yet the DA spent more time going off on tangents that were so obviously objectionable it was ridiculous. While there was one sustained objection, it continued to play out that way through the course of the cross examination right up to the end. Additionally, Penn persistently commented on how Johnson had the jury's rapt attention, giving the "best closing argument I have ever heard". However, by the end Penn felt more than confident his father would be acquitted based on the fact that Dr. Cage stated he had the lethal drug responsible for Viola's death in his bag and didn't use it. At this information the DA was thrown into a tizzy, knocked off his game, not previously having that information. This made absolutely no sense to me. Wouldn't Dr. Cage's confession he had the drug point more to his guilt than innocence? And finally, why didn't the DA call Penn to the stand? Whether he had any revealing information or not, given their longstanding contentious relationship this would seem like an obvious move.
I gave this novel 4 stars because I absolutely love Greg Isles and the previous two books in this series were among the best I've ever read. But I have to admit the final installment felt somewhat contrived and not very well thought out. I don't believe this is the end of the Penn Cage series and will continue to read whatever Isles puts out. However, I do hope more thought goes into creating situations that are more believable in the future.

Ruined Me...
Revisado: 06-25-16
Since listening to this trilogy I have yet to find another book to be as compelling. I decided to listen to The Passage because I ran out of books and while not my usually genre I was completely hooked. To say this trilogy was amazing is an understatement, and I believe it's because of the moral of the story which I won't reveal. So, as I continue to peruse book after book on audible's site for my next listen, this story continues to stay with me.

Historia
Mary Coles and her husband, Graham, have just moved to a cottage on the edge of a small village. The house hasn't been lived in for years, but they are drawn to its original features and surprisingly large garden, which stretches down into a beautiful apple orchard. It's idyllic, remote, picturesque: exactly what they need to put the horror of the past behind them.

Mary Thought About That...
Revisado: 06-07-16
I really did like this book although I am not one that generally likes ghost stories. The narration was fantastic and the two different story lines were heart breaking. I have two issues that bothered me about this book: I wish the author would have spent more time on a story line at a given time. At times it felt as though the two plots were going back and forth so quickly if I blinked I could lose track of what was going on. The second is the line: "Mary thought about that" which was repeated more times than I could count... It started getting to the point would I could predict when it was coming. Otherwise-- good book.
