all the elements or a great story in more deft hands it would have been one.

loved the world the characters and the magic, but the potential was completely wasted. this story could have had real depth but fell squarely in the realm of an imature flight of fancy. good in its own right, but it could have been so much more.

I finished this book out of spite
Revisado: 01-06-22
I've read/listened too many books that were poorly written but still enjoyable. this wasn't one of them. the syntax choices were awful and clunky and sounded more like bullet points than paragraphs to a story. I gave the benefit of the doubt that maybe it was a bad interpretation of pacing on the narrators end... but then I saw that the narrator was the author and that went right out the window. this story read like it was written by a middle schooler. (not like it was a middle grades book, most of those are way better than this)
at the backbone of this book is a truely interesting story, but the execution was terrible. the first 30 chapters were nothing but exposition that could have been one or two chapters easily. there was so much needless details as if the author didn't even trust the reader to infer that the characters could walk across a room without it being explicitly stated where each foot fell. I'd day 2/3 of this book were fluff that felt like a student trying to reach minimum word count.
there were many story points that didn't make sense and were not explained. it seemed they only existed for convenient plot devices later (like the space heaters) and I find it hard to believe the author expected some kind of deduction in determining anything in this story.
I expected better of this story based on the details provided on audible. its exactly the kind of thing im looking for. but it wasn't good. I almost put it down multiple times but since so many hailed it as one of the best books of its year... I kept hoping it would improve. once I made it to the half way point I just had to finish it to flesh out my opinion (and I have a terrible need to know the ends of stories I've started).
Not worth it.

an absolutely amazing adventure
Revisado: 06-23-21
Green manages to make a protagonist that is unlikeable and yet you can't help rooting for her anyway. I saw too much of myself in her. I am grateful for the shockingly frank commentary on the social internet and how we I enter act with it. I think anyone who likes fighting with on facebook/Twitter should give this book a listen. and its honestly impressive some things that Green I adverdantly predicted with this book (both good and bad).
I cant wait to listen to the next one.

a fascinating read
Revisado: 04-28-21
im only giving the story 4 stars because it was a little hard to follow at times. and it liked to play the "guess this object" a little too much. But I over all thought it was a fun adventure that reads like a dreamscape.

cringey and trite
Revisado: 05-12-20
it's rare that I cant get through a book, but I just could bare another minute of this. every character felt like more of a trope than a person (this may be partly due to the narrator's vocalization, but not entirely). many of the metaphors made no sense (ex: glass feeling like velvet) and it was poorly researched even in common things (ex: sarrated butcher's knife)
it follows easy paths of story telling doing nothing unique and often the plots are so terribly done it feels cringey. if your a fan of really bad horror movies you may like this, but I just couldnt take it.
I've never read a books so obviously written by a man... and not in the good way.
ps. the author has an obsession with describing oozing blisters. we get it. you dont need to say it every paragraph.

intresting but dull
Revisado: 03-05-20
I have a background in science and I love material science, so I was very excited for this book. however, I often found myself dozing or mentally wondering off during the telling of it. I had to make sure I had something very active going on when I listen to it or I'd get sleepy.
that being said, I found the subject matter very intresting and I learned a lot (when it kept my attention)

Wonderful!
Revisado: 11-20-19
Bizzar and wonderful, I found myself quickly addicted to this story, and I couldn't stop thinking about it when I wasn't listening. I'm glad to find here is a second volume, and I'm eagerly awaiting the audio book! Mr Creepy Pasta did a great job with the narration; it felt just like a friend was telling me a weird story, which really worked well for the text.
If you're a fan of Night Vale, or have ever worked in a gas station (or heard stories from people who have), I think you'll enjoy this book.

Nothing Terrifying Here
Revisado: 11-20-19
The stories were bland and predictable, and of them, I only liked one of them. I wouldn't call any of them worthy of the term "Terror" there we not scary in the least.
