Historia
Berlin, 1930—When a wave of change sweeps a radical political party to power, Sofie von Meyer Rhodes’s academic husband benefits from the ambitions of its newly elected chancellor. Although Sofie and Jürgen do not share the social views growing popular in Hitler’s Germany, Jürgen’s position with its burgeoning rocket program changes their diminishing fortunes for the better. But as Sofie watches helplessly, her beloved Berlin begins to transform, forcing her to consider what they must sacrifice morally for their young family’s security, and what the price for their neutrality will be.

Rich development of characters and use of language.

Held my interest and I liked the Integration of events going on in different parts of the world. The dust bowl and Great Depression and the rise of Hilter’s power and influence. The best part was the presentation of a moral dilemma that leaves one still conflicted. Beautiful narration also. Perfect tone, emotion and use of pause.

Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Managed to finish
Revisado: 12-23-24
Did not like the main character giving women and couples approval for things none of her business. Did not like the constant descriptions of giving birth-total turn off. Book tries to promote women’s rights and point out all the struggles women have been through at the hands of men. That got old. The ending was not to my liking. The main character seems to transform into heartless butcher after her “noble” life up to that point.

Historia
Widely hailed as a spiritual classic, this inspirational and unfailingly powerful story reveals the life and visions of the Lakota healer Nicholas Black Elk (1863–1950) and the tragic history of his Sioux people during the epic closing decades of the Old West. In 1930, the aging Black Elk met a kindred spirit, the famed poet, writer, and critic John G. Neihardt (1881–1973) on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

Authenticity.
Revisado: 07-16-24
Learning about life and traditions of the Lokota Indians. Authenticity this book was heartbreaking. Hard to believe this man survived all the tragedies that he did. He died 9 years before I was born though I felt the Battle of Little Big Horn and the horror of Wounded Knee were such ancient history but not so. I wish I could have met this man that experienced so much. I am so disgusted about the way such an elegant deep thinking person could be made into a sort of freak show for a dollar a day. I do not feel the tragedy of indigenous peoples of North American has been told enough. Wonderful book. So glad to have been to crazy course monument and first heard of Black Elk there. Thank goodness his story was captured

Historia
Union soldier John Chenneville suffered a traumatic head wound in battle. His recovery took the better part of a year as he struggled to regain his senses and mobility. By the time he returned home, the Civil War was over, but tragedy awaited. John’s beloved sister and her family had been brutally murdered. Their killer goes by many names. He fought for the North in the late unpleasantness, and wore a badge in the name of the law. But the man John knows as A. J. Dodd is little more than a rabid animal, slaughtering without reason or remorse, needing to be put down.

Fabulous
Revisado: 05-21-24
The character development of the main character is detailed and engrossing. Tale of a good man with deep thoughts and emotions. Other characters in story brilliantly described as is the scenery, terrain. Suspenseful to the end. No fairytale end but a more satisfying one lending more realism and depth to the main character. I listened to several passages three times as the writer was so clever with events and character exchanges that repeat listening highlighted every minute satisfying detail. One of the best books I have listened to. I also think the narrator did a beautiful job that fit the tone of the story.

Historia
Spanning over one hundred years, from the antebellum era to the 1980s, A Shout in the Ruins examines the fates of the inhabitants of Beauvais Plantation outside of Richmond, Virginia. Seamlessly interwoven is the story of George Seldom, a man orphaned by the storm of the Civil War, looking back from the 1950s on the void where his childhood ought to have been. Watching the government destroy his neighborhood to build a stretch of interstate highway through Richmond, he travels south in an attempt to recover his true origins.

Historia
At the age of twelve, under the Wind moon, Will is given a horse, a key, and a map, and sent alone into the Indian Nation to run a trading post as a bound boy. It is during this time that he grows into a man, learning, as he does, of the raw power it takes to create a life, to find a home. In a card game with a white Indian named Featherstone, Will wins–for a brief moment–a mysterious girl named Claire, and his passion and desire for her spans this novel.

The story was slow and choppy. I did not find it as engaging as I would expect from Frazier. It seemed like characters were just dropped. Some parts seemed very unlikely. Loved Cold Mountain but this did not compare.

Historia
Dust Tracks on a Road is the bold, poignant, and funny autobiography of novelist, folklorist, and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, one of American literature's most compelling and influential authors. Hurston's powerful novels of the South - including Jonah's Gourd Vine and, most famously, Their Eyes Were Watching God - continue to enthrall readers with their lyrical grace, sharp detail, and captivating emotionality.

Wonderful autobiography of an incredibly talented woman working her way through a rich life
Revisado: 02-08-23
Zola’s view of race today would probably be dismissed. She was not a victim but a foreword thinker living a tough and adventurous life. This book and Their Eyes were watching God helped me to glimpse and partially understand black culture or her time. Much of what she said seems to pertain to today. Great book. Lots to think about. Sad end to a brilliant life.

Lack luster. Could not manage to finish
Revisado: 11-29-22
I usually like this author but I felt this book must have been thrown together by a ghost writer with no talent. I trudged through 18 chapters hoping to get to some intricate story only to keep reading about sophomoric boring descriptions of characters wanting to hope in bed with each other. Poor all around and I gave up.
