This new release completes Brenner's recording of I Think There's a Terrorist in My Soup, his brilliant, healing post-9/11 comedy collection. This is not the David Brenner you see on TV
Revisado: 09-20-10
There are very few audio books I do not finish. This is one of them. I gave up in disgust. If you are expecting the David Brenner you saw on the Tonight Show, you will be sorely disappointed. Yes, his material is funny, but it is laced with an overabundance of gratuitious profanity that does absolutely nothing to make his material funnier. If anything, it makes it less funny because it is so unnecessarily crude. Please don't think I'm some sort of prude. I know all the words, and have used them myself from time to time. But there is absolutely no need for the verbal onslaught the Brenner presents in this recording. His material would have been just as funny without it.

Historia
On a lazy Sunday in 1954, 12-year-old Jerry Schilling wandered into a Memphis touch-football game, only to discover that his team was quarterbacked by a 19-year-old Elvis Presley, the local teen whose first record, That's All Right, had just debuted on Memphis radio. The two became fast friends, even as Elvis turned into the world's biggest star.

A closeup portrait only an insider could tell

If you are looking for some sort of tawdry expose' of Elvis, you'll need to look elsewhere. Schilling tells the story from the point of view of someone who admired and loved Elvis like a big brother. He met Elvis when he was 12. Elvis was 19, and was still driving a truck in Memphis. Jerry Schilling lived at Graceland for many years and was so trusted by Elvis that he was the one who drove Elvis and Priscilla to the hospital when she was in labor with Lisa Marie. I listened to this book shortly after taking the tour of Graceland. I never was a big Elvis fan, but after the tour, I have certainly gained a whole new appreciation for what he did in his too-short life here on earth. The book lets you know Elvis the person, not Elvis the icon. There is a huge diff'erence between the two, and only someone as close as Jerry could describe Elvis's interests, loves, and even his fears and weaknesses. This is a tender, loving portrait of Elvis that lets you know who he really was, not how Hollywood and the music industry wanted him to be. Highly recommended.
