Brave and rare telling from a sexual assault survivor
Revisado: 08-23-24
Brave and rare telling of a real world horror from the victim’s perspective that we rarely truly hear except through the skewed view of news or social media. To hear what a woman goes through when a man attacks her and she actually follows through with pressing charges is horrifying and relatable — and sadly emphasizes how many cases go untold because it is too hard, and takes an emotional toll that cannot be understood by those who have not gone through it.

Historia
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Historia
When asked to name the world’s first major nuclear accident, most people cite the Three Mile Island incident or the Chernobyl disaster. Revealed in this book is one of American history’s best-kept secrets: the world’s first nuclear reactor accident to claim fatalities happened on United States soil. Chronicled here for the first time is the strange tale of SL-1, a military test reactor located in Idaho’s Lost River Desert that exploded on the night of January 3, 1961, killing the three-man maintenance crew on duty.

Revisado: 08-23-24
Wow! Who knew all that was happening in Idaho!!!! And who knows what else happened! Nuclear energy has so many secrets that we probably are completely in the dark about. Don’t know if this is fascinating or down-right horrifying. Makes you wonder how many people (civilians) have been exposed to more than we will know in our lifetime.

Historia
Told in luminous, perceptive prose, The Last Fire Season is a deeply incisive inquiry into what it really means—now—to live in relationship to the elements of the natural world. When Manjula Martin moved from the city to the woods of Northern California, she wanted to be closer to the wilderness that she had loved as a child. She was also seeking refuge from a health crisis that left her with chronic pain, and found a sense of healing through tending her garden beneath the redwoods of Sonoma County.

Some odd analogies but incredible incite to living in a forest that could catch on fire at any time!
Revisado: 08-23-24
Some of the story seemed to stretch the analogies too far — too big of a leap in relating one item of the story to the feelings of the author. Also identifying internal extensive pain, but also almost NOT giving enough detailing of that pain if the story was also supposed to be about that. The title of the book should be the flowers that only bloom after the fire — instead of related to a fire season.

Great book - super easy to understand and relate to! So many ah-ha’s and so much ‘forgiveness’ in hearing the explanation of why we sometimes feel like we are telling our parents to “grow up.”

Historia
The Cripple Creek District, on the back of Pikes Peak in central Colorado, first found fame through Bob Womack, the cowboy who publicized his knowledge of gold in the high country and drew thousands to the area. Gold fever allowed the region to flourish, while strikes, fires, and economic hardships threatened the district's survival. The dwindling population's fortitude, plus innovative ideas to boost the economy, carried the city from a struggling gold-miners' paradise to a favored tourist spot.

Great history - but very scattered.
Revisado: 08-23-24
Incredible history with great character details of some of the Cripple Creek people of the past —
But very back and forth, with ‘bird walks’ about some people that made you wonder why there was so much detail about that person — but not enough about the demise of the city around 1900-1910.
But wonderful to read if you’re interested in the gold rush, the history of westward railroad expansion, or ever going to visit Cripple Creek.

Expected a lot more dirt and intrigue — kept waiting to hear why she was so bad. Perhaps this is bad per Mormon standards — but mostly sounded like promoting Mormonism. Kept waiting for the “good stuff” that never seemed to come to fruition.

Historia
Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive. Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal.
