Okay Story
Revisado: 12-16-24
Good premise and overall concept. The story was okay. It was a little slow at times. In the end, I felt more like I was being told about something than going along and was never too invested in the characters.
Sort of Spoiler….
I was a little disappointed that we never experienced any interaction between spider and human. After all the struggle on both sides, we were told about it. I felt it ended where it really would have gotten interesting.

Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

Excellent story and perspective
Revisado: 10-06-24
I highly recommend this, particularly for anyone who wants to stretch themselves a bit. I don’t want to say too much about it because I think people should experience the story without too many preconceived notions. Jim’s perspective hits hard. I found his journey to be moving and insightful. I think the audio version added to the experience and was excellently narrated. Well with a listen.

Historia
How do we explain our newfound cultural investment in empathy and social justice? For decades, Joseph Campbell had defined our cultural aspirations in The Hero with a Thousand Faces, emphasizing the value of seeking glory and earning immortality. His work became the playbook for Hollywood, with its many male-centric quest narratives. Challenging the models in Campbell's canonical work, Maria Tatar explores how heroines, rarely wielding a sword and deprived of a pen, have flown beneath the radar even as they have been bent on social missions.

Excellent perspective
Revisado: 10-04-24
I am a fan of Joseph Campbell, and I very much appreciated Maria Tatar’s perspective, which nicely addresses a glaring gap in Campbell’s work. I do wish she had said a little more about modeling the heroine’s journey, but I do understand that is an evolving evaluation.

Good story; a lot of loose ends
Revisado: 08-26-24
Good story. Good character development. Narrator was okay. I still had a lot of questions by the end… both in plot line and character motivations. There seem to be a number of things left up to the reader to interpret. While I can certainly do that, I read stories to see what perspective someone else is offering. Fortunately, the author answers some of these questions on his website, or I would have been even more disappointed.

Historia
Steffan Dekkard is an isolate, one of the small percentage of people who are immune to the projections of empaths. As an isolate, he has been trained as a security specialist, and he and his security partner Avraal Ysella, a highly trained empath, are employed by Axel Obreduur, a senior Craft Minister and the de facto political strategist of his party. When a respected Landor Councilor dies of “heart failure” at a social event, because of his political friendship with Obreduur, Dekkard and Ysella find that not only is their employer a target, but so are they.

Slooooow… and weak narration
Revisado: 08-19-24
I love Modesitt’s work in general. But I’ve rarely seen a story take so long to get almost nowhere. It was made worse by the narration. The narrator has a good voice, but I couldn’t distinguish between the characters at all. I get that this is all about the political intrigue, but at times I felt like I was listening to CSPAN. Maybe it’s just not my thing, but this is the first Modesitt series I will not continue. Still love his other work.

Okay story, MC unrelatable
Revisado: 05-27-24
The story was a bit slow for me. And the misogyny was a bit too much. I don't know if it was just the character or the author's voice coming through, but the demeaning perception of women made the main character someone I did not want to try to identify with. By the end, I didn't really care what happened to him. Not sure I'll give the next one a go.

Mediocre all the way
Revisado: 04-05-24
I found the story to be slow, and the changing points of view made it hard for me to get invested in any character. I didn’t care what happened to anyone.
The narration was also only okay. I never really got a sense of the different characters. Part of that may have been the writing. The narrator also didn’t seem to have a grasp of how certain words in the Star Trek universe were pronounced, which really weakened the experience.
I picked up the trilogy on a discount, but I don’t know if I will finish it.

A solid okay
Revisado: 03-26-24
The story was okay. I’m a fan of what I would call epic high fantasy. I would call this more sword and sorcery. It was enjoyable enough, but I felt like the characters and world building were a bit shallow.

All Backstory
Revisado: 01-25-24
This story is apparently not my thing. 98% of the book is essentially backstory. There is almost no forward momentum. And there is no end… presumably that comes in the second book. But I may never get there. I was forcing myself to finish this one and didn’t realize that it was not a complete story itself. I don’t care enough about any of the characters to care what happens to them.
