Historia
Lark Smith has always had a plan for her life: find a fantastic guy, create a marriage as blissful as her parents’, pop out a couple of kids, and build a rewarding career as an oncologist. Things aren’t going so well. For one, the guy didn’t work out. Theoretically, she’d love to find someone else, but it hasn’t happened. Two, she’s just been transferred out of Oncology for being too emotional. (Is it her fault she’s a weeper?) Three, her parents just split up. Deviating from the plan was … well, not in the plan. A potential solution comes from the foul-tempered surgeon Lorenzo Santini.

I loved the story, put production was problematic
Revisado: 01-18-25
Sweet, thoughtful characters, well developed and complex story- lovely insight into various lives and professions and positive overall outlook.
The only thing is that the main character’s voice was always noticeably lower, and I found I had to turn up the volume quite a bit to understand the dialogue. I noticed on my earbuds I just couldn’t turn it up enough to understand and therefore I was disappointed not to be able to enjoy this novel while on a plane.

Historia
Past midnight, Chyna Shepard, twenty-six, gazes out a moonlit window, unable to sleep on her first night in the Napa Valley home of her best friend’s family. Instinct proves reliable. A murderous sociopath, Edgler Foreman Vess, has entered the house, intent on killing everyone inside. A self-proclaimed “homicidal adventurer,” Vess lives only to satisfy all appetites as they arise, to immerse himself in sensation, to live without fear, remorse, or limits, to live with intensity. Chyna is trapped in his deadly orbit.

Just too much for me
Revisado: 08-15-23
I love Dean’s work usually but this was just so dark I couldn’t finish it. I kept downloading other books in between chapters to dilute it, but finally don’t care about the ending enough to continue poising myself with the darkness. I like his stories better when the protagonist is stronger and there is more hope and strength.

Historia
As children, Sam and Elli were two halves of a perfect whole: gorgeous identical twins whose parents sometimes couldn’t even tell them apart. They fell asleep to the sound of each other’s breath at night, holding hands in the dark. And once Hollywood discovered them, they became B-list child TV stars, often inhabiting the same role. But as adults, their lives have splintered. After leaving acting, Elli reinvented herself as the perfect homemaker: married to a real estate lawyer, living in a house just blocks from the beach.

Historia
Nina once bought into the idea that her fancy liberal arts degree would lead to a fulfilling career. When that dream crashed, she turned to stealing from rich kids in LA alongside her wily Irish boyfriend, Lachlan. Nina learned from the best: Her mother was the original con artist, hustling to give her daughter a decent childhood despite their wayward life. But when her mom gets sick, Nina puts everything on the line to help her, even if it means running her most audacious, dangerous scam yet.

Everyone from Wakarusa, Indiana, remembers the infamous case of January Jacobs, who was discovered in a ditch hours after her family awoke to find her gone. Margot Davies was six at the time, the same age as January—and they were next-door neighbors. In the twenty years since, Margot has grown up, moved away, and become a big-city journalist. But she’s always been haunted by the feeling that it could’ve been her. And the worst part is, January’s killer has never been brought to justice.

A lot of twists and turns
Revisado: 12-28-22
I wanted to like this story but there were a few too many twists for me. I also felt like the “nails biting into the palm thing “ was so over used. I also felt most of the characters were not defined enough and the ending left some questions.

The first and hopefully let book I don’t like by Dean
Revisado: 09-05-21
I really tried to get over the young female narrators voice, but it just grated on my nerves. It is impossible to weave this voice with the male narrator who is the quintessential sci-fi voice of all time.

Historia
Meredith and Nina Whitson are as different as sisters can be. One stayed at home to raise her children and manage the family apple orchard; the other followed a dream and traveled the world to become a famous photojournalist. But when their beloved father falls ill, Meredith and Nina find themselves together again, standing alongside their cold, disapproving mother, Anya, who even now, offers no comfort to her daughters.

Irritating Characters
Revisado: 12-17-20
I found the mother and both sisters irritating. The self talk, and frustrating relationships between the mother and daughters, the sisters, the husbands the boyfriends, I just wanted to make it stop. I found myself rolling my eyes and dreading the story like a bad family reunion. Returned it.

Historia
A body always tells a story - but this child’s was a blank page. Rita reached for the lantern. She trained its light on the child’s face. "Who are you?" she murmured, but the face said as little as the rest of her. It was impossible to tell whether, in life, these blunt and unfinished features had borne the imprint of prettiness, timid watchfulness, or sly mischief. If there had once been curiosity or placidity or impatience here, life had not had time to etch it into permanence. Only a very short time ago, the body and soul of this little girl had still been securely attached.

Best book I have read in years!!
Revisado: 02-06-19
This book was so fantastic I cried when it ended. I will replay it at some point, which is rare for me- but I just don't want it to end. The depth of each character, the artistry of word play, the emotional depth, the narration- just superb. I can't wait to visit the river, and investigate the true life characters that inspired some of this tail. I love you Diane Setterfield and Juliet Stevenson- how incredible you both are.

Historia
The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce, evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them everything they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil. What follows is a suspenseful epic of one family’s tragic undoing and remarkable reconstruction over the course of three decades in postcolonial Africa.

Deep thoughts about Culture and religion .
Revisado: 03-02-18
Would you listen to The Poisonwood Bible again? Why?
Absolutely. It is deep, thoughtful and full of reality. I loved learning about the Congo and experiencing what it would be like to be in a missionary family.
What other book might you compare The Poisonwood Bible to and why?
I really can't compare it to anything, it is quite unique.
Have you listened to any of Dean Robertson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but I will definitely look for some to read.
If you could rename The Poisonwood Bible , what would you call it?
"After the Congo" "The Missionary"
